[Closed] New inserts for knee pads?

Hi all,

Has anyone replaced the inserts in their knee pads (possibly with a different brand)?

I have a set of Ion K-Pact Zips - on the whole I like them, and they are still in good condition. However I have found the actual pad insert to be quite firm (and they didn't protect my knee as well as I expected on a crash), and one has recently split in half (not helped by storing in cold car I assume) - so I'm hoping I can replace them rather than getting whole new pads.

Has anyone succesfully swapped out pad inserts? I'm thinking as long as they are similar size/shape they should fit. Some I have looked at:

They're hard but they rate very well for protection according to various reviews and this lab test

Do you think their hardness contributed to disappointing protection, or is it "just" a comfort issue? They do get a bit better warmed up.

Not these pads, but I swapped the stiff, uncomfortable inserts out of some Endura knee pads for d30 insets designed for motorbike trousers. They were much better.

If you have a search for a thread about discount Endura knee pads someone in there has links to replacements. It’s always stuck with me as I wish I’d known before I’d binned a pair of Ion where the pad had fallen apart

Thanks, just ordered the D3O ones in the above link.

Bikesandboots - I had a medium speed crash onto a hard pack berm (washed out), didn't seem like anything major, but knee swelled up and couldn't ride for a few days, could have just got unlucky but seemed like the pad didn't absorb the impact very well. I saw a YouTube review that said because there isn't any padding or material between the insert and your knee this may not help.

I copied ajantom and did the same when the endura pads were sold off cheap. You can use scissors to trim them to fit. They’d are so much better than the original pads

I've bought replacement inserts for my Ion knee pads, direct from Ion.

One of mine broke in two, it's taking them out to wash the sleeve that causes the damage I reckon
