Just got a new Hope Pro 4 hubbed back wheel, existing 1 x 11 XT drivetrain all the same, stuck the cassette on (inc. little spacer it came with). Pedals forward and changes gear all fine, spins freely without pedalling, but sticking on back pedalling. The mech is all in line, jockey wheels good, I can't see that the cassette lock ring is fouling on the frame or anything - there's a definite gap. The old Shimano hubbed wheel didn't do this with the same drivetrain. What could be the cause? Cheers
Bearings need to loosen up a bit I expect.
I had this with Pro 2 Evo hubs. Did it when back pedalling in the bottom two gears. After a few months it all settled in and hasn't done it for the last five years now.
I think it's a seal drag issue.
I have a set of pro4 hubs, ran them faultlessly for 2 years on a 12x142 setup.
Have put QR end caps on and put them on another bike, and now it feels like there's a bit of drag, and if I freewheel with my feet off the pedals the pedals will turn slowly.
It may be because I serviced the ratchets at the same time.
The issue will resolve after a few rides but the outer seal that looks like it's fitted wrong way round is the issue .
The thinnest amount of light oil will resolve it .don't go mad as the seal will want to pop back out if you over do it or use grease .light chain oil or a thin smear of vaseline .
Take photos before you disassemble if your not sure but it's a simple job and just be careful how you pop ooff the green seal.
The other options but unlikely is just check the spacer has been put on the axle before the freehub\check the main black freehub seal is clicked all the way round into the hub shell .
Then check the small things spacer has been fitted if required for your cassette.you should not have any play in the cassette .
Take the cassette off and check the seal is fully located. Otherwise, it's just that seals and bearings need to bed in.
Pop the end caps off. Clean off any grease between them and the bearings. Replace. Maybe put a bit of oil on to lubricate.
I have experienced this. It’s the friction the grease causes that creates the drag and stops the freewheel operating freely.
Or, do as I do now, and don’t use Hope!
And check the spacer is there on the axle behind the free hub.
1. Do you still need the spacer when using 11 sped cassette ?
2. Check the drawing on the hopetech web page, dismantle and reassemble as per drawing. or watch the vid.

Yes
Or .... Ring Hope and ask
Thanks for info. Yes need the spacer. I'll try a few rides to see if it loosens up, if not will try what's suggested above, and contact Hope. A bit annoying for a new thing to do this. Cheers
Update - didn't loosen up after say 100 miles on a few rides and became really annoying. Contacted Hope, posted back last Thursday, back today, fitted and all working fine now. Apparently they changed the bearings and free hub. Their customer service was really good, friendly and helpful, and very speedy at resolving. Sorted.
Glad it's all sorted op.👍
