You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Good afternoon all I just wanted to find out if anyone has a good recommendation for a helmet with good ventilation, I have a bald head that really sweats under the wrong helmet. There has always been a lot of choice but now on another level I will be doing mainly trail riding not racing and hopefully some technical stuff. I have no issue with color and my head size is 59 current helmet i have found at good value is the Smith Forefront Matte white £70, Bell Super 3 - MTB Helmet around £75 if anyone has any experience of these any feedback would be mostly appreciated.
I have a Forefront the quality is impressive but the ventilation is unusual. The Koroyd material prevents airflow in the traditional sense but at reasonable speeds warm air is drawn upwards and out of the helmet. I would imagine it works great on a road bike but at mtb speeds it's less effective. Otherwise a really nice lid, like POC only different. I think the newer Forefronts have more vents.
At the other end of the scale I also have an Urge Supatrail which is basically lots of vents arranged in a helmet shape. It's light and the airflow through it is phenomenal but it's also quite poorly made and the RRP is insane. If you can find one for around £30-40 it's a good helmet if ventilation is top priority
I just got a Giro Chronicle MIPS for £60 from Mantel. I run hot and have a distinct lack of hair too so venting was a key factor for me and it seems to be ticking that box. Not ridden in summer yet though
Another sweaty baldie here. Was considering the chroncle until I read reviews that said it tends to be hot.
And another sweaty baldy here. Bell Super 3 is actually one of the better helmets I've tried. It is warm, but it's better ventilated and has better pads than 'cooler', lighter helmets I've had so it's really not noticable. I'd definitely buy another.
Kali maya2. Love kali lids
I get hot and using the Giro Montaro. Its in the sale but probably still a bit over budget.
Thanks Jay is the Montaro working? I have just been offered a good deal on a Fox Flux reviews not too bad but like the Montaro.
Thanks
I went for the montaro but found it didn't fit the shape of my head so try before you buy if you can. Cost me 12 quid returning two helmets. I got it in a medium first which is my size according to the chart but it dug into the boney bits behind my ears. So tried a large next in the hope it was just a size issue but that was way too big. So, as others have said you need a Giro shaped head for it to fit, whatever that means. Strangely, I tried a medium chronicle in a shop and that fit perfectly as does my current ageing Giro whateveritis. So, it would seem that Giro shaped can mean anything, perhaps more accurate to say Montaro shaped.
Got a deal at Evans in the end for a Fox Flux non MIPs for £48 although I think I will bring back tomorrow as not happy with vent feels too loose. I am going to try Smith Forefront tomorrow when I collect bike so if good will most probably buy as I really like reports.
Bell Sixer. Most comfortable helmet I've had, and I've had a few. Seems to vent well for me
I'm also not particularly hirsute and I have a Smith Rover MIPS that I picked up cheaply from Evan earlier in the year. I wouldn't buy it again, apart from the fact that Smith's owners fund the NRA, it's very large and really quite hot. Other that that, it's quite a nice helmet, but nowhere near as light and ventilated as my old Spesh S-Works road helmet that it replaced…
Also quite head sweaty but I generally wear a bit of buff type material in band under my helmet and find that more effective at keeping sweat out of my eyes than just ventilation alone.
That said I find the Montaro to be plenty airy enough. I'm not sure there's a consistent Giro shape though as the Montaro is more oval than its predecessor Xen.
Thanks All I did not get to try Forefront today so will most probably get to a store later in the week - The Flux I have bought seems like it has good ventilation but visor not stable enough so will certainly bring back.
I have gone with the Montaro Mips in the end felt great although I really liked Fox Flux visor felt to feeble.
Have Giro got the issue sorted with the pads disintegrating yet?....
I am not sure if they have some the problem but read best to dry them out after a ride and they also have a good replacement system in place for pads so will see. If I need to change within 3 months then will return but hopefully should be fine drying out after ride.
I received helmet today thanks for all your advice seems a real good quality helmet and comes with the mount for accessories which was an added bonus. I selected the brown color which is awesome but has some kind of colored panel that I will have to get used to at the back. The difference in feel compared to the Flux was worth the difference in cost just feels more solid both are comfortable.

if it's at the back you won't need to worry about getting used to it! 🙂
I actually really like it now had a little ride this evening and really pleased with how it feels, bike still to be wrapped so not able to unleash yet.
