I'm thinking I could do with a hardtail in my fleet. I'd like something I can use for my local mini-DH and some dual-slalom, but can also be used for local xc along bridleways and mucking about in woods.
My budget is around £1000 max.
I would prefer something off-the-peg, if possible.
Any recommendations?
How about one of these

I've looked at those Summer Seasons before, and it probably would be perfect, but I really could not live with a bright green or orange bike.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Don't they do a raw finish anymore?
genesis alptitude or latitude or indeed any of the core range.

Nope: Green, lime, or orange.
genesis alptitude or latitude or indeed any of the core range.
Alptitude = £1900 (didn't see the budget in my OP then?)
Latitude = 71deg HA (didn't read the bit about wanting use it on DH courses then?)
The Core may be worth a look though.

I use my Dialled PA for all the things mentioned in your OP. I use it at Aston Hill, uplift days, in the alps, long xc rides, pretty much everywhere. Cost a bit more than £1000 though, and was not off the peg, but a second hand build could come in under budget.
I built my BFe up for less than £1k using 2nd hand bits...
Just a thought anyway, but probably more likely you'd have to go the 2nd hand route to get the kind of frame you want rather than off the peg.
It's kinda looking that way
How about something like THIS. Should be able to handle a bit of everything.
that looks promising
The bfe route sounds possible - 300 notes for the frame then maybe an slx groupset from merlin then some secondhand forks and wheels. Could do for 1k I reckon
I might just build up a DMR Trailstar.
Bfe - £300
Complete SLX 10spd drivetrain - £160 (from Germany)
Sektor RL Coil - £240 (from Germany too, extra £20 for solo-air)
Formula K18/K24 - £120-140ish (direct from Formula outlet)
Superstar wheels/2nd-hand Hopes - £100-150ish
then some bargain-bin finishing kit.
All brand-new kit for about £1000. I know I must've forgotten something though.

It never happens tho, does it? a build always ends up costing me 30% more than I budget for.
Pipedream Sirius?
Get a Crush, I have used mine for absolutely everything, great bike.
Theres a few on ebay

Do you have any experience of that RM?
There's a lovely near new XS BFe frame on a well known auction site at the mo' . . . one 'too careful' lady owner 😉
A hardtail that does everything, you say?
Santa Cruz Chameleon

or
Santa Cruz Chameleon
Buy one and fall in love with it and think its the most perfectest bike ever created by man. Mainly cos it is
EDIT: my Pace RC305 is running a close second. A similar animal though
You could possibly build a Ragley Bluepig up for around a grand by buying from CRC, thats a hard hitting hardtail which is capable of doing anything on it climbs fine it flys downhill and will go over and down anything, you may end up looking at around 32Lb for a cheap build though as the frame alone is 5.6LB
Or if you just looking for a general XC cross country 120mm bike have a look at the Piglet.
I'm gonna shamelessly plug my bike in the classifieds...

That'll do what you want it to do at 45% of your budget... 🙂
Cheers,
Geoff.
Thanks for the offers but both the Bfe and the On-one are too small.
No worries mikey. Good luck on your quest!

If you're interested, be willing to part with my 16" BFe (it's the older, 853 framed version) for £200 frame only.
It's not immaculate, couple of paint scuffs and it has had the derailleur hanger fixed, but it's structurally sound, and besides, you're only going to be ragging it hard anyway!
Also got some immaculate Rockshox Pike 426's to go with it too... Would take £400 for the frame, forks, with a headset. If you're interested like! 😉
