(Specific requirements, Or awkward sod, you decide...)

Self contained battery.

2 modes: see and be seen*, no more (hate clicking through modes)

Roughly 7 hours run time if I use both modes equally-ish.

(*so something like 400 lumens, and 50. Not 400, click, 250, click, 100, click, bright flash, click, low flash, click, etc.)

Recommendations?

seeing as you didnt mention budget - pick the appropriate exposure light.

Set the program to the one that you want and there ya go

Hmm, I didn't know you could do that.

That's jolly interesting...

Thank you!

Exposure is the simplest answer here. Joystick probably a good option

Still haven't given a budget though

Actually, I've just thought of another one (which I already have) - B&M Ixon Core. More of a road light but it's very good, and it's exactly on spec

B&M for road, Exposure for off-road.

Bez +1

The new "choose your own" setting Exposure stuff takes a bit of getting used to, but really is useful

I have the B&M IQ Premium for on road - excellent beam pattern, looks and feels like a car headlight on full beam, doesn't blind oncoming drivers/walkers/cyclists, perfectly sound light in the low mode. And a bargain.

Does the IQ Premium need a special cable to charge?

The Ixon Core is a micro USB so easy to do at work. The IQ Premium is even brighter, though a little bigger. Looks like a winner, if charging is easy

EDIT - interesting info here - http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m.asp

Iq premium uses AA batteries - I just use Eneloops and charge them outside the light. There is a specific plugin charger as well. Agreed that if you're by a computer the Core is more convenient, but the beam isn't as useful on rural roads.

Busch and Mueller customer service is also rather good.

this is all excellent stuff.

i didn't want to dictate a budget, as i didn't want to miss out on any good suggestions. i'm usually quite good at talking myself into spending money.

B&M have gone to the top of my list, but the Exposure Sirius is making me scratch my chin...
