Okay,
Ii have just won this on ebay:
First up, have I got a bargain or am I about to get a headache trying to build it up?
Secondly, it will be doing XC duties and I'll be transferring most of the stuff off my hardtail if it will fit but I'm far from current on parts specs so what should I be looking at for Headsets/Bottom brackets and stems?
Thanks for any advice.
Martin
go on then, i'll have a go at this,
first things first the seat tube isnt a modern mtb standard so ask for the original seat post in the deal. apart from that every thing else 'should' fit, research max fork length compatibilty though.
looks in good nick for its age, a lad brought one in to an enginners work shop next to where i work last summer and it looked battered but right for itsage (wear and tear and whatnot),, think he paid a bit more for his than you have yours and thats without the shock.
give it a go it could be a blinder if not list it on retro bike,,, you never know your luck.
I've emailed santa cruz hoping they will let me know sizes for the bb/headset. I'll also ask about the seat post.
Fingers crossed the shock is working!
just to add,
one day i dream of doing a retro build myself (money/space/misses permitting)
me, myself wouldnt see it as i 'nightmare' finding parts for it i would see it as a project,,, something that,,,, when finally completed, would make you smile and give you that little warm feeling when ever you look at it. if you go for the full 'hunt down the correct parts/year/spec' it could prove to be as expensive as a entry level new bike and you will probably never make any money back on it but if you manage to hang a load of top end 2nd hand bargain bits on it then it might be a really good ride.
give it a go pal and let us know how you get on. 😉
100mm forks iirc, presume 31.8mm front mech, or maybe a 30mm??
BB will be 68mm
I'll be going for a classifieds parts list, certainly not chasing down the original parts.
The aim is to have a trail/xc bike I can throw around and enjoy!
100mm forks is what I was going for as the ones on my hardtail are 100mm!
Does anyone think the it will need a random sized headset/steerer or are they all pretty standard?
A regular 1 1/8" a-head should do.
A friend of mine had one of these and had a crazy build on his for a while. He ran Marz 66s (yes 66s!!), a newer Van R shock (pushed) and ran a home made bodged rear disc mount. He hammered it and loved it doing some good DH on it. Classic bikes.
All standard parts if I recall and he had no issues building it up other than making a rear disc mount for it.
Oh and a £100 doesn't seem to bad for a classic
This one does have a disc mount so if I fancy it at least I can use discs, might go retro and run V brake rear though.
Looking at the price of SLX/Saint parts I might have some fun building this up!
