Thinking of getting a new frame for a shopper bike. It needs an internal headset.
Never fitted one before is it a pro job or will a block wood and a hammer do it?
Also what numbers do I need to look for when buying a headset for an inch and an eighth straight steerer tube?

If its an internal cup they are a press fit, so ideally you use a headset press. You can of course use other alternative methods to press in, threaded rod or big bolt and washers, a big vice, wood and a hammer etc (depends on your competency at bodging, some people do it great, some people gouge and crack frames)

1 1/8" steerer is 28.6mm at the compression ring and 30mm at the crown race. So if it is a 44mm head tube you would want a ZS44/28.6 upper and ZS44/30 lower. I would suggest measuring the frame

Some common current sizes;
