I just scored a Fox 36 (2016 Performance Series 36 FLOAT 27.5 FIT4 3POS) off eBay .. brand new / uncut steerer
It was a bit of a blind bid on the actual model but for £245 all-in looked good whichever. Plan is to replace a set of Pikes than Jnr can then use ...
Anyway not having had Fox for years (no special reason except buying what you know) ... I’m unfamiliar and working out what upgrades/changes are economic. (Bearing in mind it was an impulse buy)
Q1: It’s the 3-pos can I remove the control knob and just fit the one with open dial
(Is it the same underneath?)
Q2: Not looking at a GRIP-2 as it would cost about the same as the fork... (not really a question - but convince me otherwise)
Q3: Not opened yet but Fox say’s comes with 1 blue token... buy now or try?
Q4: If this was RS I’d be topping up the oil... but I don’t have any Fox Damper side crush washers ... or Fox Lowers oil with magic fairy dust... so do I just ride or wait till I get some lowers oil and replacement crush washer or drain them and top up if needed with some RS Lowers oil and hope the crush washer lives another cycle?
Q5 : Anything else I should be asking coming from 5yrs of RS?
I've reused the crush washers with no issue. Would recommend using the Fox gold oil and Stendec grease.
Best upgrades for mine have been the MRP Fulfil valve (£40, les you independently adjust the neg spring pressure, I run mine about 10psi higher than the main spring) and a proper tune. I'm at the lighter end of the scale, and a Push tune from TF absolutely transformed the fork. It's lost almost all of the small bike harshness but retained the excellent support and appetite for gobbling up big hits.
I'm pretty sure you can't just replace the knob to get variable compression tune, think it's a lot more involved than that.
A1: do you mean 3 pos remote?
If so, yes, remote and lever top caps on 2016 are interchangeable. Just a bit fiddly to install the indent spring/BB without it popping off a cross the room. My 2019 36 fit4 OEM Scott is the first fox fork I've not managed to swap remote to lever assemblies (no indent recess).. could be an oe thing vs factory though but needed a new cartridge to allow lever top cap.if it has a lever top cap already.. I don't know of an "open" dial on a fit4. All have 3 positions regardless of the method of adjusting the compression.
A4: up to you but would certainly be continuing with gold.
Fairy dust stuff is probably Teflon green for the grip damper. Gold is sticky oil like mixing float fluid with 10wt for the foams back in the day.
A4/5: I'm pretty much a set sag, rebound and ride kinda guy...never added or removed volume spacers.
Cheers guys ...
I went and fitted them as is .I will order some Fox gold before I open them up.. and get a flat socket so I don’t scratch them up. Hopefully they didn’t dry up sat around in the warehouse.
Ill give them a play this weekend ... I’m booked onto Okeford uplift so that should give them a workout.
I popped the comp adjuster off and as submarined says .. it would need a different top on the FIT 4 damper but that’s not critical...
I’ll look into the MRP fulfil
Well okeford didn’t go as planned I forgot they are a 180 mount and stuck on a spare 180 not having checked it ... let’s just say some of the trails are scary with no front brake so ended up riding my other bike .. but the fork seemed lovely and plush I only managed to get to Rogate last weekend. I have to say I’m impressed just with the recommended settings stuck in. Even knowing it’s 10mm extra it felt like it handles the small bump nicer than 2015 pike charger 1 with either the Debonair or luftkappe .. I didn’t really get chance to push mid support but didn’t feel anything unpleasant either and i just managed full travel by deliberately smashing the nose down.
Anyway .. eBay were kind again and whilst looking for a fulfil valve scored the whole MRP ramp control for £40...
The magic treacle arrived (Gold) so all topped up.
Pretty impressed really, set up was a doddle and I think I’ll need the MRP just for something to tweak...
