In the market for a new 120mm travel fork, can be 9mm QR or 15mm axle.
Ideally good small bump sensitivity and longevity!
LBS are recommending:
Fox Float 120mm (open bath NOT FIT) at £540
or
Rock Shox Reba RL 15mm axle @ £399
Current for is 8 year old Fox Talas which was OK but not great re: small bumps.
Anything else I should REALLY consider at the £500 mark?
I would buy the Reba from Merlin for £100 less 🙂 Or these and space them down. http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/fox-racing-shox-32-float-150-evo-rl-qr15-white-tapered-id74199.html?gclid=CPz_oeWwrLYCFaHHtAodJlUAcw
Then take it to the shop to get it fitted or to borrow their tools. Shops love that, so they do 😉
nmd: I saw this earlier and I'm guessing these are the forks my LBS are talking about (based on their vague description):

I'm guessing the performance of these will exceed my 8 year old Fox forks (especially as their knackered!)
Fitting a fork is no big deal to me, cutting the steerer is the only critical bit!
The Reba will be really nice, that'd get my money now that it's Solo Air again
nmdbasetherevenge how dificult would it be to reduce these down to 120mm travel? What about warranty does it void it if I change the travel?
Yeah I'd go for the Reba even though I did like my only pair of Fox forks.
These are the ones I meant Here
It's easy and it won't affect the warranty. Look on the Fox site for instructions.
If buying a new set, get a maxle/bolt-thru etc.
What about Magura, I've a 140mm Thor and it works well - very stiff.
New forks = Merlin!! I would go Rockshox these days - much less servicing required than Fox
Then take it to the shop to get it fitted or to borrow their tools. Shops love that, so they do
Don't forget to pay them in biscuits.
Oh and tell them you're an engineer if they Whinge
You'll soon have them eating out of the palm of your hand...
+1 for the Reba 15mm axle. I have the 2012 version and it has served me well so far.
Last time I fitted forks I used a wide gauge pipe cutter rather than a saw. Very neat, didn't even need to file it to round off the edges. £5 from B&Q.
Good advice, id go for the Rockshox..
Thanks all I'm going to go for the Rockshox and will use seavers tip above! Cheers!
