I've recently chopped my Hayes Pro Taper platform pedals in for some Unite pedals.
On some pedal heavy rides I have been getting a really sore left knee, right on top of my knee cap.
Anyone had similar experience and any advice on how to try and prevent it?
Modern flat pedals and shoes can be so sticky that you're effectively pedaling on an absolutely zero flat system
Is your seat high enough... that usually causes top of the knee pain... it may also be that you're putting your foot on the pedal in a position that is not natural. Sit on the edge of a table and look at the angles your feet make and try and replicate that on the pedals when you ride...
As per @zezaskar - you've probably ended up with no 'float' as your shoes are gripping your pedals so tight. I have found that certain shoe/pedal combos naturally try and force your foot into a postion due to the alignment of the pins and the design of the sole.
Seat height isn't a bad place to look up as well, but don't discount pedal grip.
A similar thing happens to me when using Nukeproof Horizon pedals combined with Shimano GR7 shoes. The shoe-pedal interface tends to force my feet into a specific position. In long, constant pedaling this can be a little uncomfortable and I tend to readjust my feet periodically.
If knee comfort alone is your thing, I think Shimano SPDs still can't be beaten
Thanks, I'm going to try pretty much all of this. I'll also experiment with some where my foot naturally comes down on the pedal and where it sits when I apply pressure.
I was going to mention saddle height as well. I found the same when swapping to thicker pedals.
