Has anyone got the new silver-finned DX light?- is it any better/different to the old one in terms of function? i already have an original but would like another for helmet mounting.

Mine arrived last week, only done a couple of rides with it so can't comment on reliability, but otherwise it seems good for the money.

It's bigger than the old one, and doesn't come with a head-harness thing, so probably less good for helmet mounting. The mount itself is more fiddly than the old rubber band, and I had a bit of bother getting it secure - you have to really crank it down. It was okay by the second ride, though, and there's no noticeable strobing once it's all done up properly. Tip: twist it round the bars a bit to squish the rubber fins flat (or you could chop them off, I suppose).

It only has high, low and off settings, but that's a plus in my view, fewer clicks between modes and less faffing generally.

The battery is much better, longer cable, much bigger, looks well sealed, and the charge indicator is handy. Likewise the light gives you more information about the level of charge via the multicoloured LED switch, which goes green->blue->orange->red->flashing red->off (so I'm told, not got further than orange myself). Mine takes ages to charge, well over the four hours it says on the box, but that might just be the charger. Second ride was pretty wet so both light and battery have obviously got reasonably good sealing.

The light itself seems as bright as the old one, the beam pattern is pretty much the same, so I think from that point of view it's more-or-less identical.

Overall it's a definite improvement as an on-the-bike light. For helmet use I don't know, I've not tried it, but I suspect the old one would probably be better, what with both the head unit and the battery being smaller and lighter and that.

Got mine today, now trying to work out a way to mount it to the helmet.
I might go and get a mount from spokeshirts but having seen the old style DX this type of mount makes them stick up so I'm looking for ways to keep it lower and may go DIY.

It looks nearly as good as my airbike and certainly better than the original magicshine. Put it in a different box in this country and you'd pay twice as much easily.

Interested to see how other people are mounting these, or the old ones to helmets.

I got the Spokeshirts one & mount it to the helmet using the supplied mount.
It does stick up a fair but and I have whacked it a few times on low hanging branches.

Battery seems to be sealed OK, run time seems OK, it's plenty bright enough & seems just the ticket for a helmet mounted light to be honest. Very pleased with mine.

I thought it looked like this design might have a much lower profile helmet mount. Is there a picture of the spokeshirts helmet mount?

Thread with alternative bar mount. I've done it and its loads better than the standard one, no movement at all (works on old and new lights).

Used a small rubber 'o' ring I found lurking in my toolbox. I think I got them in the plumbing section in B&Q for a couple of pence.

I managed to get a £5 mount from Halfords, quick swapover of a couple of bits of plastic and it's good to go. The halfords mount tilts forwards and backwards so I mounted it towards the front of my helmet where it sits lower.
