You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I need some new wheels for my bike; a 2016 Cannondale CAADX 105 (with discs). This is my sole, do it all bike; Commuter, cross bike, road bike substitute with slicks. It seems as though my options are quite limited as I need six bolt fitment on the hubs rather than centerlock, due to my disc brakes. My CAADX frame has 135mm spacing on the rear I believe.
I quite like the look of the Hope 20FIVE wheelset from Merlin. These come with Hope Pro4 hubs in a range of beautiful colours (red or orange, hmm?). They stock the RS4 hub (these are more road hubs right?) equivalent but, as I need the 6 bolt option for the rotor rather than centerlock, this would be prohibitively expensive.
Quick question... Hope Pro4 hubs on a cross bike which I use 50% of the time as essentially a road bike... Will this sound absolutely ridiculous!? I know Hope hubs are loud (I don't mind it) and I don't want to be shunned in group rides! I like the brand (always have) but just don't want to end up hating the wheels!
Opinions appreciated!

I'm in the exact same boat and keep coming back to the same wheel set.
Nothing to add OP but will keep an eye on this thread.
Out of interest OP, why can't you use centrelock?
I'm considering both options for an upcoming build. Leaning towards RS4 due to (alleged, slight) decreased freewheeling resistance although I am a fan of the Pro2/4 noise! (have pro2 on my current gravel bike!)
Only spanner in the works might be if I went 650b in order to fit larger volume tyres, then it'd have to be Pro4 if I wanted off-the-shelf as RS4 on 650b would need to be a handbuilt option.
RS4s are loud enough, I have them on my road bike (transferred across from my old cross bike which was 99% road use) I don't spend all that much time freewheeling on the road so can't say it bothers me all that much.
Novatec cxd? if you can find them. Wiggle used to do them for 320 quid a pair but not any more it seems.
I have Hope 20Five wheels on my Grrrrrrrrrravel/Adventure/Whatever Bike (Jamis Renegade) and to be honest I can't fault them.
They have held up well despite my clumsy riding and 100kg mass.
As far as I can make out the difference is the RS4 and Pro apart from being centrelock is that there is less ratchets fitted but you can add them in.
I've not opened mine up to check yet.
Centrelock is so much better/easier for fitting disks and they can be relatively cheap to pick up. Also seem to work fine with hope calipers.
You can get adapters to fit 6 bolt disks to centrelock hubs anyway.

Also, would let you run Shimano's "Freeza" rotors, which are (annoyingly) only centrelock fitment.
All the DT disc road wheels come in centrelock with 6-bolt adaptors included so will fit both.
Just check with hope that the pro4 will take SRAMs XD-road freehub when they inevitably release it.
I just went with novatec hubs, they're cheap (£60/pair) enough that if someone wants to play silly buggers with standards again next year I can just rebuild the rear wheel for only a fraction more than a lot of brands freehubs.
I put 20FIVE on my road bike, as (at the time, I'm much less now) I was 123kg and I didn't trust the 21 spoke wheels that came OEM. I also wanted to go tubeless so did so with Schwalbe Pro-Ones. The wheels are great; I like the hub noise but it does seem to surprise "proper" roadies.

Stop me if I'm wrong, and it very much appears that I am, but as my disc rotors are six-bolt, I assumed that I would need to stay with this fitment. It appears that I could perhaps achieve this with an adapter.
To me at least, it appears that there is certainly more CX off-the-shelf options if I was to have centrelock disc rotors.
Surely not as straight forward as this!? And under a tenner per wheel...

Which brings me to my next point - My current cable disc brakes are poor. I want to upgrade to hydraulic discs but this may prove prohibitively expensive once I factor in the new levers etc.
I've got a pair of Hope 20five wheels with Pro 4 hubs on my Singular Kite and can't fault them, the noise from the freehub saves having to use a bell when approaching walkers on the canal towpath that I regularly ride on 😉
Hi.
I have a 2018 CAADX, I just fitted some Hunt 4Season Gravel wheels. Look really good for the price. Came (actually) tubless ready, taped and supplied with valves, and some spare spokes, adapters for centre lock> 6 bolt.
Only had chance to use them twice, on gravelly type stuff, feel good.

Yep, centrelock adaptors are as simple as that - sorta.
It's super easy to fit 6bolt rotors to an existing centre lock hub and esp in the case of DT will be lighter than the 6bolt alternative still.
It's near impossible to go the other way though although with Boost spacings I suppose you could maybe get an adaptor in if you reallllllllly wanted an ugly heavy bodge.
The only real downside of centre lock is irrational fear of the necessary tool and being stuck with virtually no choice other than Shimano for rotors. As most fit a Shimano rotor if not going bling (Hope) or cheap (everything else) I'm not really sure this is a problem. Centrelock always ends up lighter simply because the 6 bolt interface on the hub adds a huge lump of beef to the combined weight.
I have some carbon wheels with Hope Pro 4. I also have some Hunts. I had a go with the Halo Vapour GXC wheels the other day. They Halo were really nice. The Supadrive hub had immediate pick up and almost felt like I was riding a singlespeed again. The overall package looks to be great VFM.
Worth a look if nothing else.
