Hi, new to the forum and need a bit of advice. I ride a Marin Northside Trail and the threads on the right crank have worn away so I'm looking for a new chainset. Current one is a Truvativ five D and the bottom bracket is a Truvativ sealed cartridge BB. I haven't really upgraded and am new to all this and I am confused about the whole compatibility thing between chainsets and bottom brackets. I don't do any serious downhill riding, generally just forest trails etc.. Wasn't wanting to spend a great deal.

Any advice about which sort of chainsets I should be looking for and what would be compatible with my bottom bracket? Apologies if the query seems a bit basic 😉

What do you mean by the threads have worn away?
While they'll come with a new bb and chainrings and so need a new chain and cassette to work properly shimano deore stuff is very hard to beat for the price.

A quick interent search suggest you have a square taper crankset. Which thread has gone? If it one that hold you crank arms on, then you'll need a new BB not a new crankset (shimano squaretaper BB are cheap and very reliable), unless it the pedal arm thread? Even then you could probably locate another (ringless) crankset 2nd hand (for pennys) to transfer your rings onto via the classified - most ppl dumped square taper system and rushed to Hollowtech II crankset, so lots of ppl have old sets sitting around doing nothing.

If you set on chaning it though, as steve say you not only need the crankset but will also need to change the chain and cassette (due to wear). Again deore is the cheapest and most reliable system you can buy for your money (check out rosebikes.co.uk for prices).
