I need some advice on replacing parts on my five.

My chainrings are worn on my xt double chainset.

I can get new chainrings, with the bigger one costing £50 from crc.

Or I could buy a new deore chainset with new bb for £50 from ribble cycles.

Do I stump up nearly £60 for xt chainrings or slum it with the cheaper option? In reality I don't know what the difference will be between xt and deore parts. Lighter maybe?

What would stw do?

are they the Shimano specific BCD? If not buy some other rings from somebody else, you might be able to take the deore rings off the chainset and fit them to the xt cranks

I’d put up a wanted ad  as many people converted to x1 so have chainrings in their parts box.

Alternatively buy the new crank and sell your old one to recoup some cash.

If the chainrings are compatible I'd buy the Deore, move the rings over, and then either keep the BB and cranks for the spares box or sell them. (What would normally happen, speaking personally, would be that I'd pretend to myself that I was going to do the latter and inevitably end up doing the former.)

Even SLX chainrings from one of the German suppliers come in pretty cheap - both for around half the cost of one XT chainring. Brake pads and bottom brackets are also dirt cheap from there usually, which will offset any extra postage costs.

Looking around, not sure what the latest XT double chainset is as it looks like the one I had is now unavailable.

Fifty quid for a standard 38t chainring is taking the piss somewhat...

Thanks for the advice. All interesting options.

Do I have to use shimano chainrings or are there cheaper alternatives that will fit?

For reference, the outer chainrings is 104 bcd and has 38-24 AM stamped on the inside.

And what's the goto German online shop you use?

I generally shop around a bit - bike-components.de, bikediscount, rose.

Rose looks good in this instance.  27 quid for 38 and 24t posted.

I've just bought the latest Deore M6000 2x10 for £60.  Must admit they look very nice, and as they are hollow tech now, the cranks are coming in lighter than my old SLX 660 cranks.
