In October last year I replaced my 10 speed cassette (shimano XT) and chain (shimano HG or similar) but kept the single front chain ring as it wasn’t badly worn.
Last week I replaced the front ring as it had started dropping the chain, and when I checked the chain it was at 0.75. So I replaced that too (Shimano Ultegra).
1<sup>st</sup> ride yesterday and the chain was skipping in mainly the lower gears 2-5. The cassette shouldn’t be worn (roughly 400 miles) and the chains on the right way (its directional)…..any ideas?
I run a 1 x 10 set up.

I thought that, but if the old chains not worn (0.75), how can the cassette be?
This is only the second chain on that cassette.
Depends on the conditions it all been used in though, if you run a chain and cassette together over the winter (especially this winter) then they'll have worn together. I'd put the old chain back on and forget about it and buy a new cassette next October and fit the new chain to that.
Never had any luck stickinhlg on a new chain on an old cassette no matter how old. Doesn't take much for slipping to start imo. Replace both chain and cassette together, ride until destruction. Old chain rings seem to be ok though, get much more elife out of them for some reason.
Just stick the old chain back on- chain checkers are all well and good but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Keep the new chain and fit it when you buy a new cassette in several thousand miles' time as normal.

I’ve been caught in the past with a worn chain and ended up having to replace the whole drive chain.
Thought if I changed it early this time I could avoid that, obviously not!

TBH I gave up trying to swap chains at .75, and these days I just let the whole thing wear together until it's goosed. Saves a bunch of time messing about with chain checkers.
