I’ve got an 11x40 XT setup I’m converting to 1x and want to increase the max sprocket size. Would you get an XT1x46 or an extender like one up components? Both are about the same price.
If I had an 11-40 XT cassette and wanted 11-46, I’d probably buy a whole cassette and have a spare to fallback on or sell rather than spending the same money on an expander to put behind my old cassette...
I went for the oneup extender it gives a better spread of gears https://www.oneupcomponents.com/products/45t-sprocket-18t or you could go for the Sunrace cassette https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/sunrace-mx8-11-speed-cassette-11-46-535478
The xt cassette has a horrible jump in gears (unless they've updated it) whereas the Sunrace is way more flowing. Cheaper and more beautiful too if that's allowed to matter.
Sunrace ftw.
Is the sunrace as robust at the XT though?
In my experience, yes. Bike discount.de has the 11-46 sun race cheaper then the 11-42 at the mo.
The silver one is 50 euros.

I've been running an 11-46 on my fatbike for over Year and an 11-42 on my hardtail hooligan for about the same. Been perfect.
Alternatively, smaller chainring size than you were thinking. Or get it set up first and decide then.
I found going from 2x to 1x, I lost roughly two gears top and bottom of the entire range, but they were rarely used and I didn't notice really.
11-46 XT does look like a serious jump at to the 46 though. Not sure how well Shimano have got it working. Have tried a SRAM Eagle and pretty amazed at how well it shifts to and from the dinner plate.
