What's to choose between these? 29x2.3. Both around 900g (for the exo HR2 and Grid butcher).
In particular I'm wondering about mud clearing ability and rolling resistance?
I've had a 2.6 butcher grid on the front of my geometron this summer. Its been great! A bit slower than the 2.3 DHR that was on before, but I prefer the grip.
I've not had it through much mud, so cant help you there.
I've ran both in 27.5 a few years ago. I found the highroller slightly better rolling as the grid butcher is a softer compound (or it was). I've also tried it up front in grid 29 form but preferred the minion dhf.
I wasn't a fan of the Butcher Gripton 2.6, came up narrow and was prone to washing out.
So I'd go HR2 out of those, but my preference for an all-rounder front tyre is the snakeskin Magic Mary. I'd suggest considering that too.
I found the compound quite hard (as in it didn't wear out like a maxxis did) and not that grippy once the trails were wet. In the dry it was ok.
Sidewalls were pretty flimsy, killed two tyres due to the sidewalls not being able to hold air pressure.
Not too worried about the differences in grip between the above as its for a winter rear tyre and will have none anyway. Rolling and mud shedding are the deciding factors - any more comments on those? Will have MM on the front.
My Butcher Gription 2.6's were only on my bike or 2 rides, then came off as i didn't get on with them at all. Coming from Butcher 2.3s (which i did like) i found them to be very thin side walled and in corners were wandering around and slipping out alot.
I'm now running Maxxis DHR's in 2.4WT both front and back, which are awesome.
2 nearly new 2.6 butchers (27.5 tho') for sale??.......

Yep - same here. Addix soft Marys ftw
Well aware the sidewalls are thinner (and the tyres 100g lighter) than the old butcher grid. As it happens the latter is what I ordered, and the new version is what arrived, so not suitable for intended purpose of putting on the gnarpoon 🙁 for which I'll be getting a dhr2 instead 🙂
The shop has offered to sort it out though I'm wondering whether to keep them as winter rear for the hardtail. While the sidewall is disappointing compared to the old butcher I can't imagine it's much different to the high roller exo which weighs the same? hence the questions about rolling resistance and mud; do I faff around sending them back and order a high roller for the hardtail, or keep em?
The old Butcher Grid and the new Butcher gripton grid have a different tread pattern. There is also a Butcher Grid Trail that's just come out that plugs the gap between grid and Blck Dmnd
Running Minions on one bike and the side walls are the same as a gripton grid
Neither, I'd go dhr2- hr2 just isn't all that good these days.
The lighter dhr2 is 50g lighter than the butcher grid we all think is flimsy... Could be suitable weight for ht though. Does it roll faster and clear better than hr2 then?
Difficult to compare, the Butcher is an excellent front tyre - up there with the Minion DHF.
I'd put the HR2 out back and would have either a Butcher or Minion DHF at the pointy end.
