Hello,

Building a new bike after a few years.

FRONT
First question : is a 2013 RS Reba with 15mm axle QR compatible with those wheels : http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/WPSHOEMT66/shimano-wh-mt66-centrelock-wheelset

They use a 15mm E-Thru axle.

REAR
The rear hub is 9mm QR so presumably a "normal" 135mm frame will be compatible ?

Thank you ! Forks and wheels ordered.

Next : I have a Zee rear shifter, will a Shimano SLX M675 Disc brake lever be compatible with it, it's 2nd generation I-Spec, whatever that means.

Also : running 1x10 with a 11-36 cassette. Would a ZEE rear mech 23-28T close ratio version be compatible ? If so what would be the advantage compared to the 32-36t wide ratio version ?

Depends on your zee shifter model. I have the same brakes. And recently bought a new shifter becuase my zee 1x10 shifter wasn't comparable. In fact, it didn't have I-spec at all. Was only bar mountable.

Not sure about the close ratio rear mech. Is that the same as "short cage"? If so, I think the short cage just keeps the chain a bit tighter when u don't have a large front chainring. I'm using a medium cage slx with a 1x10 setup and the chain looks a little tighter than with my previous long cage mech. Am doing a long ride later this year and will be switching back to the long cage mech and triple front mech.

The close range one won't work on that cassette.

Thanks. Now it gets tricky. The new frame is BB30 (2013 Commencal Supernormal).

Can I possibly use those cranks ? If so, how ? or with what adaptors or BB ?

Pretty much any double or triple chainset will take a Race Face NW chainring (I think)

I can certainly vouch for Shimano anyway, as I run XT crank arms with a single NW on my steed.

The shifter / brakes should play nicely together. As long as the shifter is definitely iSpec B, then it should be compatible with brakes from both iSpec A and B.

Zee mechs are finicky and even the FR version doesn't work with all frames / cassettes. If I was worried about compatibility, I'd go for SLX or XT in GS flavour.

Could anyone confirm that the following 2 parts will fit on a BB30 frame:

And that the "adapter" is a also the BB, ie replaces the BB rather than comes in addition too ?

If 100% compatible, are there any downsides ? The ring is £40 alone so £95 for the cranks+ring seems cheap particularly as I have found the adapter/BB for £25... Seems to good/cheap to be true...

The cranks are out of stock on CRC, but I don't think they're a bargain especially. They're heavy old forged lumps of RaceFace's cheapest aluminium. You can buy SLX cranks with three rings for £69.99, and I'd be surprised if the shimano ones weren't lighter, stiffer and longer-lasting.

I realise that you might want to bin the rings and get a narrow wide of course. But by the time you buy a different BB, you may as well have just bought a BB30 chainset, no?

I'd get a Praxis / SLX chainset (sell on the rings) & RF NW ring.

£170 ish all in.

So roughly what you are spending anyway, plus, as mentioned, it will probably be lighter.

OK I understand, I think I was going by the RACEFACE brand reputation.

The SRAM ones look great but they are 170mm only.

I would prefer a "proper" BB30 crank but I can't find a 175mm 32t single ring solution.

I am confused about a Shimano solution, sorry. And I don't mind Shimano btw.

I have up to £150 to spend for the complete crankset (BB, arms and rings). Maybe a little more for a lighter solution.

I know that FSA will be releasing 2 solutions that will fit the bill exactly soon : both in Comet and (hollow) Afterburner, but neither are currently available.

I can understand the Praxxis solution if you already have 24mm cranks but I don't think I understand why you would bother fudging an adaptor when you need to buy cranks anyway and could just buy an off-the-peg setup that's correct for the frame.

Having said that, it's been ages since I bought cranks so I don't really know what's on offer with these enforced new 'standards'.

Have you checked if you need BB30 or PF30?

P.S. Those FSA cranks look like a bargain but
1) FSA cranks are generally overpriced at RRP so the discount isn't really as much as it looks
2) I think you'll struggle to get a narrow-wide chainring in that size (3 bolt , 86mm pcd). This is an FSA proprietary size and although google says they have shown some narrow wide rings at trade shows, I couldn't find any available to buy.

I definitely need BB30 and there are NO off-the-shelf solution for a 32t BB30 single ring set up until FSA releases this:

Amusingly, that last one features a megatooth ring, so they will have to exist commercially by the "second quarter of 2015".

No creaking reported on Wiggle feedback. It's permanent and full width as opposed to the L/R adapters so I can't see how it would creak. Add a £70 SLX triple and a £35 ring (Octane one), I am looking at a complete/serviceable/lightish solution for £120 minus the proceed of the 3 chain rings.

Tbh, RF Ride cranks are OK. I ran a set on a daily rider that was Only Bike for over a year, they're now on a friend's Inbred being similarly thrashed.

I've had Evolve cranks (the OEM ones Orange use and the heavier duty proper Xtype ones with the double bolt setup) and both were fine even though the OEM ones polished more due to paint finish rather than blast tough cast look.

I'm running M675 slx on both my mtbs now...

Ordered SLX triple and a single long teeth 32t ring.

Do I need specific ring bolts for the single or can I re-use the ones that come with the (triple) chainset ?

There's a good chance you can use the 'bolts' off the granny ring and the exisiting 'nuts' from the middle and outer. That 's what I've just done with some (older) XT cranks.

EDIT as typing realised I may have dropped a bollock there. mmm. You might be alright anyway or you can grind down the 'nut' to shortern.

Cheers. The bolts did work. In fact I am surprised how compatible it looks. I am not sure the chain is going to clear the end of the arms but it might well do. Not light overall though : exactly 800g all in (with the 32t, BB and adapter)
