Just bought a new bike from CRC, yes a Vitus, with a Brand X dropper already fitted. I am at the bottom end of the size range for L and so want the post as far down the seat tube as it will go. However when I do this the seat just descends regardless of lever position. When I put the post back to its original position, it works fine, drops when lever is pressed ,stays down , returns when lever pressed. I was so irritated with it I thought I would remove it and just put in a rigid post. However I can't get it out. When seat clamp is undone you can't pull the post out far enough to undo cable. The outer seems clamped somehow in the internal routing and you can't pull it through in either direction.
Help please, I feel there is something obvious I have missed!
Not faulty. 👍
When you push the post down, it is pulling on the cable outer and operating the post.
Take out and sort the cable to correct length etc. Its probably doubling up/kinking in the seat tube.
EDIT: To remove, detach cable inner from trigger end if new bx lever. Old lever has cable attachment at the post end....
If you are really just pee'd off, just cut the inner.....
Cheers, on my way to give it a go!
Don't lose the grub screw etc at post end of it has is. Yours might not if it has the new lever?
Good luck.👍
I’ve got a Vitus Escarpe and like you the cable wasn’t keen on moving. But mine has down tube cable cover and under that there are clamps holding the cable very tight. Loosen them off and a bit of encouragement all is well, post and cable move fine. As above a kinked cable may be the cause of your problem.
I think the cable must be clamped but there is no handy cover to remove to get at it. The bike is an eSentier so it does have a battery locating mount in a place that could well give access to the cable but I am a bit wary of fiddling with the electrics!
Sorry FOG, can't help there as I have no experience of that bike.
I'm assuming the outer cable won't move through the frame, it's held in place by something? Though that something could just be a tight bend in the cable around the frame somewhere I guess. Not that, that helps.
Just a thought - if it’s the post clamped cable end then undo the lever from the bar and feed the whole thing through towards the post to give you enough slack to pull the post all the way out.
If it’s the new style I’m guessing you can just release the clamp at the lever to get it all loose enough to pull the post out.
It’l be trial and error to get the outer / inner the correct length imo.
Same happened to me when I fitted one to my commencal - it's because the seatpost is too far down and the cable mechanism is getting pinched - raise it a litte and try it again to see if the problem disappears.
You can't push the outer through the frame at all so I am assuming it is clamped somewhere. Raising the post does free it off but is then too high for me. I think I am going to have to bite on the bullet and remove the battery mount. Or snip through the cable and use an ordinary post!
Is there a forum or FB page for that bike anywhere?
You can't be the first to come across the problem mate?
I'll try the emtb forum, there must be someone who has an eSentier.
Finally sorted it! I obviously needed to have less cable in the seat tube but couldn't get it to move in either direction so eventually I used a pair of pliers to pull the cable out of the tube. The outer must be well wedged in with other cables or whatever because it took a real heave to get it to move, very slowly, enough for the dropper to work .
Another victory for brute force and a few good tips.
Sounds like fun in the future for when it needs replacing.lol
Still, that should be a long time from now and you might have a better idea of how it is rooted by then.
Did you put a load of cable lube on the, erm, cable whilst it was out?
