Hi

So, I'm trying to put my "shiny, shiny ,want" feelings aside and get some perspective on whether a new trail/all mountain bike will feel noticeably better than my current bike.

Current bike:

2010 Intense Tracer VP (140, 150 mm adjustable travel)
2010 Rockshox Lyrik RC2DH @ 160mm
XT groupset
Avid Elixir CR 203/183 brakes
Thomson stem, Easton ea70 monkey bars
Hope Pro11 / Stans Flow wheelset
Rockshox Reverb 125mm dropper post
Wellgo magnesium flat pedals
Maxis minion / cheap bontrager tyres
Rough weight 32.5lbs in large

New bike might be a Santa Cruz bronson C but not sure which build.

Will a bronson be significantly lighter? It's hard to see how really. My intense is fab and the only thing I'd change is to get a lighter fork up front (which is hard to do given it's the old horrid old legacy 26" size that's just awful now apparently).

Thoughts? Ta

Anyone? I assume I'm automatically shunned for riding legacy technology?! 😀

If I had the spare cash I'd buy a new bike tomorrow. I don't so I'll keep riding my bandit until it breaks.

I doubt it would make me faster but shiny things are nice.

You're being shunned for working against nature with your "New bike or not new bike" question.

The answer is always "New Bike", whatever the question.

Hmm. New bike would be half cash, half some 0% deal most likely.

MiniRRR number 2 on the way too... But presumably he or she would want a happy and relaxed dad?

Man maths suggests that half the bike is already free, and the 0% means the other half is better than an interest rate, so that's actually saving money!

Sounds like you're owed a new dad present, how about a Bronson?

But presumably he or she would want a happy and relaxed dad?

Exactly, just ask at any time before birth. Silence is their acceptance.

Well, Bronson C S build is about 30lb. Bronson Cc Xt build is about 27lb.

Both are significantly lighter.

It'll be longer, lower, slacker and prettier. Plus you can gloat at all the new tech you have on your bike, 650b, taper, boost, new VPP, *and* an external bb!

It's not gonna really make you a better rider, but new bikes are ace. It shouldn't be 'do I need a new bike?', it should be ' do I deserve a new bike?'.

M0rk - your logic is exactly the same as mine on all points 🙂

Rickon - I don't understand why a bronson would be so much lighter when the C (cheaper model) frame is still about 7lbs, which is about the same as my Tracer. It's not like my current build is heavy either..

Next question - is that bronson pink just too pink? I quite like it but you have to be amazing on a bike to justify a garnish colour!

Oh I just don't know - lots and lots of wonga for a few pounds weight saving!

Also how can an XT build be 3 lbs lighter than the other one, what's hung off that acera?

Looking at some of the real weights of pro XC bikes that are bounded about every once in a while I'd be sceptical to say the least at a big 'nduro seld with mid - high end kit on lyrics weighs 27 lbs if I'm honest

Looked at individually it's not, but it is really. Flows are heavy, pro2s aren't light, but the Bronson wheelset isn't gonna make much difference.

Not sure what minions or bonty tyres you're running, but depending could add weight.

Old lyric will be heavier than a new pike.

Thomson stems aren't light. Xt groupset... Is it a double or triple? The Bronson is 1x, so a bug chunk of weight there. What crank? Lots of weight to save in a crank. Chainrings? Cassette?

32lb is a lot of weight for a 6lb frame.

Anyway... 30lb vs 32lb isn't gonna feel any different on a trail after about 2 minutes. The real reason to change will be the much better geometry. And the nicer colours.

My Specialized Enduro was 27lb off the peg with 165mm travel, SRAM X01 kit, pike and dropper. My Reign was 27.5lb with very similar build. You'd be very hard pressed to get any lighter than that though.

I'd go new frame. something 2013/14 so you can use all your existing parts and not spend a fortune.

to be fair, most of us are reeling from the idea that a 2010 Intense hasn't snapped yet. 🙂

My thoughts? You've got a really nice bike with a quality build. But, it will be worth 10% of sweet F.A used as it is obsolete. If you want a new bike, can afford a new bike, and can accept how little your Intense is likely to fetch compared to what it cost, then go for it.

Or look at what DT said - get a new or newish frame and fork, get the hubs rebuilt on fashionable 650b rims and move everything else over?

Nay; stick with 26's. You should be able to find a decent frame second hand for next to nowt. Dunno what those Lyriks are like; maybe send them off for a service aswell or something.

Out of interest what would my intense be worth?!

The lyriks are amazing forks (with the mission control DH damper) but could do with a service!

I think if I was to replace the frame I'd get lighter forks but then again there's nothing actually wrong with my frame..

Thought about buying a frameset and swapping over your current parts?
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/trance.27.5.frameset/25011/90656/

Will still need new forks, have the hubs recycled onto new rims.

Hmmm, a new frame and forks would save a little weight but lacks the ooh shiny shiny factor. The trance above looks nice but I'm not sure what it'd offer which my current frame doesn't? A grand seems a lot for a frame that appears on £1800 bikes too . Hmmmm Indeedly

I go round and round with the same idea in my head as well. I have a 2010 Enduro that I built up with Raceface, Renthal, Hope etc etc

If I was to go down this route I would buy frame, forks and wheels but even then you still talking big money and would you even notice the difference!!

By the why what is it with the new geometry that is so better than say a 2010 bike. I could stick a angle bush in the rear shock?

Sorry for hijack!

^ yep, my current bike has a HA of about 67 degrees so is reasonable by modern standards in terms of slackness.

Hmm.

I was riding with an old friend of mine at the weekend with a similar bike to yours, Tracer frame from around the same year.

He was saying that even though he was aware of all the loveliness out there he couldn't justify looking for a new bike and was happy with his.

However, you have come on here to ask so it is my guess you have already made your decision and are just looking for the cosy feeling that others are of the same opinion.

Bronson's are super lovely.

*I did of course spit in my friends face then left him for dead in a cloud of dust from my far superior, ever so slightly larger wheels.

*May not have actually happened.
