Hello, it's the time of the year when I'm thinking of putting my Cube Stereo 140 sl to bed from October to April, gives it a break from the slop fest.

So will be breaking the Hardtail out, however I'm thinking of trading it in for a newer bike. Budget £600 Max.

My current hardtail is a Brain Rockrider. Good spec but it's getting a bit tired and with either 27.5 or 29er wheels.

It's main uses will be Canal blasting and getting me to a from the train station over winter along the canal, and a few light xc rides.

Any suggestions on bike choice?

New set of tyres and a spare set of bearings for the cube. It’s a mountain bike. It’ll cope

Out of those 3 I think I’d take the Boardman for the slightly longer forks. I haven’t looked at geometry but the other 2 look a bit more arse in the air xc based bikes. Although perhaps that’s what you’re after?

Basically it will be the backup bike to my cube. I do use the Cube in winter but mainly if I'm going on a specific ride that requires my main bike.

Whereas a hardtail is used on my local xc route, canal path, fireroads and country roads.

I like the boardman but not heard great things about the Halfords service.

Mate of mine just spent £650 on a Vitus frame and Hunt wheels, swopped all the kit from his old hardtail and created a winter gravel bike. I was so jealous I went and blew a lot more than that on a Whyte Gisburn!

Of you buy the Boardman is so your own servicing / use another lbs for work to be done. Sometimes you get lucky with a good bike mechanic at Halfords other times you can end up with an utter spoon. I wouldn't let that put you off their good value bikes.

For a virtually identical spec to the Boardman but for £440, I'd have the Voodoo Hoodoo..

EDIT: actually, I'd go to £680 (down from £850) and get the Bokor https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/mountain-bikes/voodoo-bokor-mens-29er-mountain-bike-18-20-22-frames

29er, Rockshox Judy forks, SRAM NX, SRAM Level brakes, decent looking geometry.  Can't think of much better for less tbh.

Looks well specced the Bokor to be honest.

Worth chopping my 26 inch Hardtail in then?

It's got Deore 2x10, Rockshox XC32 air forks. Trying to justify a new bike to the other half 😂.
