I have purchased a new bike with a big discount due to being last years model. During delivery the wheel has damaged the down tube near the water bottle cage causing a 1cm dent/scratch.

The supplier will provide a full refund, however there is no more bikes in sale so I would have to buy the lower spec bike. i.e. Fox vs. Rock Shox, Deore vs. XT etc.

Looking for advice on whether to keep (the damage doesn't look structural, but the supplier won't provide a frame warranty) or return it and buy the lower spec 2017 model.

Thanks!

If they won't support a warranty claim on a new bike I'd be sending it back immediately for a refund

but the supplier won't provide a frame warranty)
Shame. But also, if you send it back, they'll probably end up selling it for even less. If it was me, I'd ask for a partial refund, keep it and not worry that I wasn't the first person to ding the frame.

EDIT : You don't say if this was an N+1 buy with a bit of left over disposable income or the buy of your life you've just saved 5 yrs for. In the first case, get 50 quid or whatever knocked off and it's a bet you'll never need the frame warranty (and the manufacturer may even honour it then) if it's the latter send it right back.

My Wife's Cube came with a scratch/small dent in the down tube when it was bought new.You could see where the box had been pierced in transit. She didn't want the faff of having it collected etc.

She phoned the shop and they gave her £150 worth of stuff (Five Tens, Renthal Chain Ring, water bottle etc).

Helitaped over it and covered it with a sticker 🙂

I got a pair of Pikes that had a few small cosmetic blemishes. For the price I decided they were worth keeping.

Me i'd look for either a small refund or payment in kind i.e Some pedals, shoes or helmet etc and keep.

Lets face it no matter how careful you are with it at some point its going to pick up scratches and/or a dent or two.

I'd return unless it was an extremely good deal. A dent affects the sell on value if you think you might sell one day.

The bike was insured in transit. They should be able to claim compensation (if they can be bothered)

Last time it happened to me on a 2nd hand bike the seller claimed and gave me that.

If the bikes a keeper then try and get some money knocked off.

If you plan on selling it any time soon then send it back as stated above, you just lost a lot of resale value.

Where did you buy it from?

THIS it is essentially second hand without that and second hand and damaged at that

I would need a massive discount on the discount price to proceed

I'd send it back, think it would annoy me forevermore and more importantly theack of warranty (may never be needed of course) puts me off

Pop a pic up

Does depend on tbe dent but personally I'd take a bit of compo to offset the drop in value & loss of warranty

I'd not accept a pre dented frame. No idea of it has effected the structural integrity or not, you may struggle to resell in the future.

What junkyard said- with no warranty and existing damage you've effectively paid over the odds for a second hand bike.

Happened to me too, bought a new (but year old) Saracen Ariel...it arrived with a dented downtube, sent it straight back and they sent me back an undamaged one.
With what I had planned for that bike (enduro, DH, uplift days etc) the risk in structural integrity didn't seem worth the risk....i was offered a discount/partial refund instead too but declined.

Half the reason people buy new bikes from a shop is to have warranty cover, discounted old stock or otherwise.

I'm not entirely sure the shop can do what they're suggesting under SOGA, someone more learned will be able to advise, but either it's a saleable, safe product for which a warranty will be honoured, or it's unsafe and they shouldn't make the sale...

Personally I would chop it in, take the refund and walk, it sounds like a shaky deal, and you have a clear route out which won't leave you out of pocket...

Are you saying the brand new bike you've bought has no warranty or that they are not willing to warranty the frame due to a dent/scratch caused in transit?

Unless I'm miss reading something, the frame / bike is being warrantied in as much as you're being refunded should you accept it and how is it 2nd hand? It may well be last years model (hence the reduction in price) but if you're the first consumer / owner, it's not 2nd hand.
If you no longer think the bike is worth your purchase price, send it back and get your cash back.

If it's more damage than the usual stuff it would pick up through use I'd send it back, if not I wouldnt bother - IE itll look like that in 6months anyway....

I'm reading it as they won't warranty it as damage in transit isn't a warranty issue, it's a packaging/transit issue. They have rightly offered to refund, or no doubt you could negotiate a discount and keep it to compensate you for the damage? In which case I'd expect it to be covered by a manufacturing warranty to cover other (none dent related) issues.

Your call ultimately.

Hi. Like the others said, really need to know price and model to give a accurate opinion. But With no warranty on frame even if you get a bit of money off, it would not be worth it as down the line that small scratch/dent could screw you. Just send it back, theres a lot of deals out there at moment, depending on what you want.
