My LBS has got an immaculate 2012 ex demo stumpy going for the same price as a 2010 heckler (1500 ish).

I have 24 hours to make a desicion, what are your thoughts?

Cheers

Have heckler. Excellent but a bit steep. Much improved by offset bushes and a works angle headset (for me). Also pretty light frame. Stumpy gets good reviews but mate tested one last week and had a few problems including cables eating into frame under bb. Not ridden one though so wait for words from the wise.

Stumpy gets my vote. As for cables eating the frame, they just need pulling through properly before tightening the cable mounting bolts. Needs to be done with no air in the shock and someone sat on the bike to make sure they're the correct length at full travel.

I've had longer travel versions of both in the enduro and bullit, I'd say the stumpy.

The stumpy gets my vote. Why don't you test ride both and see which suits your riding style.

What will you be doing on it? Heckler better with 150 forks.
Which has better spec?
Do you want a tried and tested big brand bike or a great Niche bike at a v good price?
What colour are they?
What is your gut telling you?

I have a heckler btw, and love it to bits!!

mmm

downhill orientated singletrack type riding (my local trails are Bringewood, Hopton, Eastridge etc..)

Same spec

yes and yes

Both white

My Gut instinct is saying the Stumpy. I had an FSR back in the day when they first came out and loved it, however in my younger days I always wanted a Heckler, but never been able to afford it. My instinct is saying that the Heckler will be too much weight. Its 33 pounds over 27 for the stumpy.

Heckler, they're meant to be a pile of fun to ride.

Geo - where is the extra 6lb coming from if they are the same spec?? The frame is about 1 lb heavier than the stumpy.

I've just come back from the Alps on my Heckler. Up until the point a messed up a tabletop and broke myself, the Heckler was a dream to ride. It just eats stuff up - I often ride at stuff now instead of around, as the bike loves it.

My previous bikes were a Cannondale RZ120 and a Trek Fuel Ex. Loved them both for XC, but for anything gnarly, the heckler spanks them both!!

One of the lads in my group has a stumpy. He loves it, but rides it hard, and has destroyed it (spesh triad rear shock exploded, 2xsets of jockey wheels, new front wheel)

Not sure about the extra weight, the stumpy is 2 x 10, whereas the heckler is 3 x 9, Both bikes were weighed in the shop in front of my own eyes, as I wondered what the weight of the heckler was, as it did feel alot heavier than the stumpy, their was a 6 pound difference! Not sure why.

How does the Heckler feel riding uphill and teetering around, Im sure it is better DH, but how about the rest of the ride?

Cheers all, for your inputs so far.

I guess the Heckler must have some more AM bits, such as wheels/tyres/bars maybe coil forks? My Heckler is just over 28lbs.

Going uphill, it is slightly less precise than my old bikes, but still perfectly good enough. It is quite a short bike, so on the really steep climbs, you have to get your weight over the bars to keep the front down.

I've lent it out to mates who ride a stumpy, commencal, and a zesty, and they all love it!!

The one thing that puts me off spesh is the red, and their spesh specific forks/shocks.

Went for the stumpy in the end,

If anyone wants a 2010 Heckler for 1600, or a blur for 1950, then give Pearce cycles a bell 🙂
