After shortening the wheelbase of my lovely old 1980's tourer last year, I had the nice man Simon at Stanhope build this lovely frame for me. I wanted a contemporary take on the original with:
* Disks
* Thru axles
* 853
* Modern geo to avoid the 'gate' look
* Fillet brazed
The build is 3x9, XT rear der, and Tiagra shifters and front der. There's an SP dynamo there to be connected up to a Luxos U and I've a Tubus rack to go on when I can be arsed. I think the green's come out OK n'est ce pas?

I think it'd look better with a caradice bag rather than panniers. I've got panniers for shopping, but for touring/backpacking I think they just encourage you to carry more stuff than you need.

I was away touring last July, met a Volvo on a blind bend and came off worst. Broke my bike and my neck 🙄 On the upside I now have a new bike and some extra Ti holding things together...

Hydros? Well it's a low/no maintenance long distance tourer and I don't want the risk of faff on tour. I have hydros on several other bikes and though they're slightly better braking than Spyres, they're definitely not fit and forget. All IME Obvs - don't want to get into that debate...
Headtube? Yes the position is very upright. Bit of a shock initially... Funny though, we had a custom Longstaff tandem made a few years ago and the position is almost identical (without the big bit out the back obvs..). The bike it replaces is/was a bit more sprightly (I think), the green machine is more long distance arm chair.
Sorry, wheels? Spa built Kinlin XR-26RTS rims, SP dynamo front and Pro 4 on the back both thru axle.
The rims are asymmetric to give a few more mm clearance for the calipers. I'm going tubes ATM with Schwalbe Marathon Supreme's which are f-ing expensive and not very long lasting but light and supple.

I was lucky enough to finish work a couple of weeks ago whilst still in my early 50's so have the opportunity. I'd like to do the Great North Trail and a round Britain coast ride plus some more of the Euro Velo routes. I've a friend who's a serial planner and we do a few shorter trips each year. Those plans will all get reset once we're free... I'm also gonna finish the ride I bailed on last year under blues and twos. It was Cambs to Hull (sounds exciting n'est ces pas?) to Morecambe to Newcastle via Hadrian's cycleway. I 'finished' just outside Settle so need to do that one being a bit of a completeist...
Plus a few other bits n bobs...
Sorry for the downer, but that's not for me, I'm sure it's brilliant X 1000,000 though.
Why do people bother posting negative opinions on a feel-good thread? Is it just to be heard? Adds nothing and no-one cares that you don't like it.
boblo, that is one nice tourer. Looks really good with the silver bars stem and seatpost.
The route you did from cambs to hull might not take sound exciting, but having toured that area a few times, I found it really enjoyable and lots of nice quiet roads just to cruise along, would happily have another trip round that way.
I've also a mate who is a serial planner, unfortunately that's usually as far as it gets, as life gets in the way and most trips with him never happen, but the ones we've done have been good. We should have been away this month, but hopefully when covid settles down we are hoping for a trip in September or October.
Aye, the Lincolnshire Wolds are well worth a visit, we got to ride over the Humber Bridge as well which was novel.
I spent my working life planning and any tandem tours we do, I get all the planning and admin so it's ace to have someone else interested. Apart from Covid the 3 of us that ride together tend to get stuff done - so far.

Haha crimson, it's also what my army green London Rd wanted to be but instead, it remained a stoically utilitarian tool that no-one could love for it's looks but I've relied on to take me across Europe and other jaunts.
Well first 25 miler done and it's very smooth but not fast especially with those pesky easterlies... Remediation limited to one squeaky bottle cage and the front disk just whispering part way round.... Result! 😁

I used to have a steel tourer for commuting, meant to tour but never got round to it. It was horrible to ride fast, but lovely to cruise along. It was at least 4-5mph slower than the road bike, but so much more comfortable. Hope you have some great trips on it when all this craziness is over👍

boblo, we originally planned to get train to Dumfries and then ride back to the north east, via the borders and kielder forest with a couple of wild camps.
But if it's just me then probably head over to south lakes, up the coast then back via hadrian cycle route. Then save the Dumfries trip for another time when my mate can make it.

2nd vote for a nice saddlebag for light duties over panniers. It only takes a few minutes to fit a rack once you've got the adjustable bits in the right places.
