I've lusted after one of these since I first saw one, but could never afford the frame price, let alone the build. Anyway - managed to get one second hand, then strip and sell, well, pretty much everything and then rebuild into what I wanted. First ride was today and it's bloody awesome!

Spec:

Open Cycles Upper Gravel Frame - DT Swiss Ltd edition,
Chris King hubs on Nextie Carbon rims laced with CX-Ray spokes,
Chris King Headset and BB,
Dura Ace R9100 shifters, brakes and front mech,
XTR M9000 Rear mech, cassette and chain (via a Tanpan),
Bontrager XXX Carbon finishing kit,
Hope rotors,
Schwalbe G-One 700*40mm tyres,

Total weight 7.6kg

GRX mech won’t (according to specs) allow you to run 2*11 on an 11-40 cassette. The XTR M9000 does.

The ultegra RX mech will run 11-40 with a road link type hanger extender but capacity is 39t so you need no more than 10t difference between the front rings.

Lovely bike mind, I hired an UP in France last year. One thing I'd look at is some protection on the dropped chainstay. The one I had was a bit chewed up from chain suck as the clearance was really tight at the chainring but this may be different on the Upper

Cheers everyone. It really does ride superbly. It replaced a Tripster ATR, so not a budget bike, but it’s so much lighter and yet more solid. It’s truly epic. Every time I step on the cranks feels like it’s being launched. LOVE IT!

Middleburn Bullet caps - a classic. In this case custom faded from red to pink (they don't do a pink) under a UV lamp at work.

There's something very satisfying about a metal valve cap over a crappy plastic one. I have them on all my bikes and as I value them, I never lose of misplace them.

I still have one Middleburn bullet in my toolbox.
Get some CaffeLatex valves if you want nice (redder) caps 🙂
