It was New Bike Day in my household but not for me!

My eldest had outgrown his (very nice) loaner Extra Small Orange 5, so I built this up for him from a mix of new parts and stuff I had lying around in the spares bin.  Spec was dictated by what I could easily get hold of...

Frame: Sonder Signal ST

Forks: Older but barely used RockShox Rev RLT,

Drivetrain: XT/SLX 11speed

Cranks: Thorn 160mm with Superstar N/W ring

BB: FSA Square Taper

Brakes: Deore with 180mm rotors

Wheels: hope hubs with Stans Flow (older slightly narrower) rims

Headset: Hope

Bars: Answer haven bars,

Tyres: Specialized butcher 29x2.3, set up tubeless

Saddle: SDG Fly Jr

Seat Post: Brand-X Descend II Dropper

Stem: Brand-X Enduro

Grips: Brand-X Half waffle

He’s a very lucky and happy boy as I think his bike might be as nice as mine! Now the whole family are on Steel hardtails as I have Chromag Rootdown, his Mum has an On-one 45650B and his little brother has a Ragley Blue pig!

That rear mech is going to be at extreme risk in the biggest cog. It's going to be almost touching the ground 🙂

He's stolen one of mine, the little blighter.

I was lumbered (see what I did there) with the hydration pack full of discarded jackets...

Nice!

How does he get on with the 29" wheels? What height is he?

Lovely bike, lucky boy! Also interested in your lads age/height as my 11 year old is going to need a new bike soon, currently on a 24"er

He's about 5ft2, which is the bottom end of the size chart on the Sonder website.

He's like me though in that he is short of leg and long in the body so the reach (412.5mm - my Chromag from a few years back is only 436mm!) isn't ridiculous but has room for him to grow a bit.  It's a tricky compromise as you don't want to replace a frame/bike after 6 months but at the same time you don't want them riding a gate in relative terms.

He seems to like the big wheeledness thus far but it was a fairly tame run out on Saturday.
