Hi all,

I'm in the process (slowly) of building a new bike to get me back riding after an accident. I've always just made old stuff work; now I'm embracing boost etc with a New Stanton Slackline frame.

So far I've picked up some 2023 RS Pike 140mm forks, some Hunt Proven wheels and a Oneup dropper. I'm planning on using some old SLX brakes and a Thomson stem.

Initially I was going 1x12 SLX group set but I can find one. what other choice should I consider. Also saddle. What saddle? I lover the Brooks C17 but Ergon look nice.

what hub driver is on your already purchased wheels? unfortunately Sram and Shimano cassettes are now a different fitting.
Although one brand's mech will shift on the others cassette, you are probably (for best value for money) looking at buying a full drive train as you are starting from scratch.

Good point. Shimano HG. I’ve a 1x10 existing cassette and shifter that would fit but I’d like 1x12 ideally.

SRAM cassette and chain and the rest from whatever flavor of Shimano you prefer.

If it's an HG freehub then I'd go for a Deore rear casette.

SRAM or Sunrace for the 12sp HG cassette if on a budget.

Garbaruk cassette if you want something a little more bling and want a weight  saving.

Mech and shifter would be SRAM / Shimano based on preferences and budget/availablity.

Stick with the brooks - it works for you, don't change now as youll probably regret and go back to a brooks.

Other than more expensive consumable parts what are you expecting from 12sp ??
11sp Shimano will slot straight onto the HG and you can do Sunrace 11sp as well.

Are you wanting 12 Speed for the range?
If so, microshift do the 10sp advent x rear mech, shifter and 48t cassette for a little over £100. I have it and it'd been faultless. I'd always go with 10sp over 12 Speed for durability and replacement cost.

If you have an HG freehub then Shimano 12 speed cassettes won’t fit - not even the deore 12 speed one as that’s micospline. You’d need Sram NX or Sunrace / another alternative. If you can then afford sram GX or higher I’d go for sram - but shifter / mech wise I wouldn’t buy sx or nx personally - they aren’t very durable.

Deore 11 speed fits and they do an 11-50 cassette I think it is - so plenty of range. Sunrace also do wide range 11 speed cassettes.

I’ve just put one on my gravel bike 🙂

NX 12 speed cassette will slot onto your HG rear hub, get GX or higher for the rest. Take the time to understand and fit it correctly, or get a shop to do it for you, and forget about it.

Can't you build your groupset piecemeal on Merlin? they don't have a full groupset, but seem to have most of the individual elements in stock.
In experience the pricing buying individually is no more expensive than buying a groupset
SLX is a great choice, but seems to play well mixed w SRAM too

Specialized Power saddle

Really happy with a full NX group at £200 Inc cranks. The rear mech is supposed to be fragile so will upgrade to GX if needs be eventually. Still cheaper than SLX (which is also excellent).

I had an NX rear mech OEM, and it needed constant tweaking, and ultimately committed hari kiri into the rear spokes. I replaced with an SLX. SLX is totally fit and forget, not had to adjust in 2 years and 1000 miles. No issues mating w the NX shifter
