Firstly, I know nothing about bikes. I went to Austria (meierhofen) last year, hired a bike and had a great time. So...

I'm looking for a new bike, looking to spend £200-£300 and comfort is what I'm looking for most, to be used mainly on pavement and perhaps some minor off road stuff. A bike for leisure and fun I guess.

Is a hybrid bike for me?

I'm 6ft, big built (chunky), I don't have access to a local bike shop so have no idea about frames sizes.

Do I even need a new bike? I have an old 'raleigh marauder' from my junior school days - have bikes moved on much? I got it out the shed last week and it's in good condition but weighs a ton.

Thanks for reading.

Riding the bike on the pavement will probably be illegal so you shouldn't do it. I'd get yourself down to a few bike shops and see what they have and recommend for you.

Despite what the manufacturers tell you bikes haven't moved on much, certainly at that price they're still just metal frames with 2 wheels hanging off them. Get your old one oiled up and pootle around on that. If you like it, have a look in a few shops.

For your money you'd get a bit lighter bike, better brakes and smoother gears.

Riding "On Pavement" isn't illegal - riding "On THE pavement" is 😉

Sorry, I meant pavement as in roads, don't know why I said pavement.

Anyway thanks csb, I think I'll stick with my old marauder.

Cheers.
