It's junior's 9th birthday and we want to get him something decent, thinking 24" wheels, he's 140 cm tall. I can't see anything very exciting yet, full suss is out of the question but would really like to get disc brakes if poss. Budget is probably up to £400 ish, anybody know of any possibilities? Thanks

I made my own using 26 SIDS , superstar 24 inch wheels, cheap disc brakes, old 9 speed kit and a donor bike. One Kona one Scott Junior

Under budget and a proper MTB
I dont think you can but a proper MTB you can get some excellent rigid bikes at your price point but not something you would be willing to ride which is what my kids have

Did loads of research on this so feel free to mail me or ask on here and I will list up the options

Having followed child on a rigid 24 inch wheel bike through "Badger" at Coed y Brenin I'd say that rigid was fine...

Built my 9yr old a Trek MT 220 up from parts for under £50 .They have cranks with dual positions for the pedals and good gearing for little legs. His doesn't have mounts for discs at the rear but the newer models may have.

My lad turned 9 today and now the proud owner of a Merida 624 hard tail mountain bike,
I looked at this and the cube 240 but he chose the Merida very pleased with it so far, think there is a model above this one with better gearing and disc brakes but for us this is ideal

At 140 tall he would get on an Islabike Bienn 26 small.

And next month he would outgrow it. 😆

Imo try for 26" - just built my 10yr old a 15" merlin frame using bits "in stock" and it's great. We ride weekly inc gisburn and local trails and no problems!. I'm hoping I can just upgrade frame (larger) as and when.

I built from scratch with an old Kona Stuff 2-4 frame - which probably came in at about 400, but did involve some generous donations. If I was buying now I'd also be looking at the Commencal stuff - have you seen these?

I make that a bit over £470 at the minute 🙂
