hey i brought some 2012 rock shox rebas rl back in january they seemed very stiff but i didnt think much of it having never really owning a set of forks from new.
i noticed i was losing negative air pressure fairly quickly, then when i was the the bike shop the dust seal had popped out so i got him too take a look and he didnt think there was enough oil in the forks, so took my forks apart and sorted that out for me.
the forks were then feeling great working better then anything id ever owned before, few rides later and i notice the negative air pressure is losing air again so i pump back up and turned the bike upside down so the oils in the forks coild get around.
I came back 10 minutes later to find the dust seal had popped out this time on the side where the air actually goes in and there was oil leaking out.
Im gonna take them back into bike shop tommorow to see what he thinks. i should probably send them back to merlin but i really hating on the idea of having to wait for them to sort it n not being able to ride my bike so hoping it something simple like valve not being tightened enoug or something, does any one have any ideas as to what might be the problem? why i keep losing air in the negative chamber?
Thanks for your help
Sadly - that's a warranty job. Dont even try and fix them yourself.
One of the air seals is failing (this must be second or third case this week on here). The air pressure escapes into the lowers and is forcing the outer seals to pop.
Take them back to the shop. Sorry.
Thanks mate, yeh took them back to my local bike shop today and we basically came to conclusion something funny was happening, and he spoke to the sram tech guy today and he said he wanted me to send them back, my mate said that my main priority was to get them working again as quick as possible to be able to get out n ride asap but they just didnt want to send us the service kit out even if i paid as they seemed to think it would just happen again.
That lead us to believe that they have had a machining fault or something and must have had a fair few problems with these.
My bike shop is now going to try to see if i can send them back to sram direct myself to speed up the process as i dont really want to have to go through merlin cycles, took them a week to reply to my initial email and had to phone them to get a response on the 2nd, and they will only cover postage for me to send back on a standard postage which take 3-5days, id rather just pay and send them direct to sram as i think they must be well busy at the moment... the customer service has gone down hill since january or perhaps there aftersales service isnt as great as the sales service.
thanks for your help and advice mate
