Trying to resurrect a old orange 29 , shock died, it was  a cane creek 190x50 but merlin have fox rear shocks of 190x45 on sale .

Will work or will their be problems with using a shorter stroke?

Cheers

You'll loose 10% of your travel but it'll work.

I might have a spare 190x45 Fox shock I picked up cheap. Used a few times to try a lower BB out on a bike that takes a 200x57. I’ll look.

10% less travel, makes it "down country"?

I'm not sure you can do this both ways, but I had Sprung suspension change the stroke length from a 250/55 to a 250/50 by removing an internal spacer.

All depends which shock it is.

Anyway, found the shock I was using to try things out. Has offset bushings in it (more messing about with ride height) so would need new standard bushing fitted. Will take some photos in a bit.

It’s an OEM shock, but I bought it from either Merlin on Chainreaction, I can’t remember which.

Kelvin, late reply and thanks for the info and photos. Going to try and source a 190x50 shock in the first instance.

The shocks you can see advertised as 190x45 could quite likely be 190x50 with a 5mm spacer fitted.

Fox dont neccesarily make a 50, 47.5, 45, 42.5 and 40mm shaft, but all those lengths are available. They will typically make a  small selection of parts anf fit spacer to get all the individual sizes the OEMs want. Loads of info on the Fox website, will you need to do your own research on the exact shock you have been looking at.

This shock is 50mm stroke. What I typed up there was a mistake. Anyway, as I’ve taken photos, I’ve popped the shock on eBay. There are a few others on there, so plenty of choice for you.

Not the case at all sadly…

190x50 was an older “imperial” shock measurement… It was actually known as 7.5x2.0”…

190x45 comes under the newer “metric” standards for shocks, and 45mm is actually the longest stroke length manufacturers tend to make now in this length (Marzocchi aside, some of their shocks still come in that 190x50 length too)…

Pretty sure I've an RP3 or 23 190x50 in the shed if you want me to check?
