Hi, I race enduro and ride DH is it wise to buy a neck brace? i have a 661 rage full face. Ive heard if u crash bad the full face can move ur neck and it can break?

Thanks in advance!

For DH riding i ran a full face and full body armour, when neck braces came out i added one too. Rode the other day and forgot the brace, didnt break my neck but did tweak it when face planted into a berm. If you have one and are running a FF, wear it. For enduro, without full armour, dont think id risk going DH speed so would skip the brace too, but its an individual choice (tho i imagine you will get mocking comments from other riders if that bothers you).

😆

Well yes, that is true, but not because you are wearing a FF without a neck brace. it's more likely the momentum of your body/head hitting the ground, meaning your neck extends too far in one direction, crushing/breaing vertibrae.

What a brace does is it allows the helmet to hit it, thus stopping your neck from extending too far. The trade off for this is it transfers the forces from your neck to the other (less immediately critical) parts, such as your sturnum or clavical (dependant on design) so they take the brunt of the hit and can break, but are less likely to paralise you in doing so.

Also worth noting for enduroists, they obviously don't work with open face lids. At. All

Wear one or don't, your call. I don't.

Fullface can increase the risk, mind- more weight = more stress on cspine, more sticky out = more leverage. Worth it? Who knows. Actual risk of serious injury riding bikes is pretty slim.

Needed for enduro? No, not needed. You might choose to, all power to you if you do. I race in open face, but I am fairly slow 😆 Remember you'll need to lug it around all day- neck brakes ironically are pretty unsafe when you're NOT wearing a fullface so if one comes off, both need to come off, srs. And in most races, helmet is mandatory at all times so you need an open face too! (or, you wear the fullface all the time. Orrible)

A mate of mine wears one whenever he wears his full face, including for enduros. I can't say until recently that I had ever noticed and I don't judge him for it. Your neck is pretty important and if you feel safer with one then go for it.

As northwind says though do not wear it without the helmet as they can cause nasty injuries if you were to have a fall pushing your bike up a slippy slope or tripping over something.

What you going to do with it if you do a open face for transition race?

Yup, take off at same time as FF, dont wander around with it on and no FF!

Also, they dont work well with some back-packs, but being Nduro you'll have a bum-bag so shouldnt be an issue 😆

🙂

I wear an open helmet all day and usually have a melt down on the climbs.
