Going quite fast down a country lane in Cheshire yesterday (on my road bike), I take a right-hand bend and see a transit van almost totally in the wrong lane heading right for me. The surface on the inside of that bend isn't great hence I assume he decided to use the other side of the road. Still, he was doing about 60 mph and I was doing at least 30 mph (tailwind), and I experienced that horrible surge of adrenalin one does in these scenarios and quickly tabbed the brakes. Fortunately, he saw me and yanked the wheel left probably missing me by a couple of metres, but at that closing speed it was a fine margin. One can only speculate if my high-vis vest and gloves were any benefit.
Incidentally, it was only a few hundred metres from where a pedestrian was killed by a car last year.
Anyone recommend me a good helmet cam that won't cost the earth?
surely it was a near hit... if it was a near miss, he must have hit you 😉
Well he gave you more than 1.5m so he probably thinks that's OK.
Not sure about the camera, but I can recommend slowing down, on corners.
