A Speedbomb frame seems to have appeared earlier this week and using parts largely harvested from another bike … I now have Two Stooges.
I picked up my first, a blue Mk2, off here about a year ago. I’d fancied them from afar for a while and bought it more out of curiosity but with relatively low expectations of a fully rigid bike. However, it turned out I bloody love it and has been my go to bike for most of this year.
More challenging trails show up the age of the angles and left me on those occasions wishing for a more ‘modern’ geometry. Throw in lack of decent dropper options with the 27.2 seat tube and I was back on the Stooge website considering the options. A bit of pondering the in-stock options and collecting of change from down the back of the sofa and a Rose Tinted Speedbomb was ordered. A big thanks to Andy @ Stooge here. Such a nice guy, really helpful … even when on holiday. Frame and fork ordered and delivered with no fuss. As a nice touch that it comes with all of the bolts / cable clips needed.
But even with the new bike, I can’t get rid of the Mk 2, it’s here to stay. The plan is to use the older ride for gravel / XC rides and the Speedbomb to be my trail bike for more technical rides.
It needs higher rise bars and time will tell if I want to stay on ‘normal’ tyre widths or go for 29+. All for the future though.
I like that! If I ever get tired (tyred??!) of my fat bike it could be a lighter option. Let us know how you get on. Have fun!

Always fancied a Stooge. One day maybe.
I’ve a mk5 stooge and really rate it, reminds me of when I started mountain biking only with decent headtube angle, tyres that grip and modern parts that don’t mysteriously break or fail to work. They’re great on tight singletrack and bridleways around me.

I've been thinking of a Speedbomb, but then a DMR Trailstar Ti has caught my eye.
Now I'm not so sure.

I've been really drawn to a Speedbomb (spending too much time at The Woods Cyclery doesn't help!) but I've always wondered what's the minimum tyre size you can run on them without causing issues?
I'd be happy pedalling around a fast 29x 2.4-ish tyre but not sure I have the legs for a proper 29+ as most of my riding pals are on XC bikes/gravel bikes with ~2" tyres.

Not had chance to see what it's like on full on trails with 2.4/2.5 tyres but it rides really nicely on the kind of trails that I'd expect to be the territory of Gravel/XC bikes.
Having said that, the Mk2 with 27.5 x 3.0 rolls fast enough too, of course it loses it out on the flat/fast stuff but not as much as you might imagine. The big tyres make up for it with a bit of compliance on the rought stuff with loads of traction on the uphills - certainly over gravel bikes.
