You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So after my last Dyfi tripI wanted to go back, but with a more suitable bike. So I ordered an S.170. Picked up my lovely new S.170 yesterday and took it straight to Dyfi. Â
DMR Vault and Deathgrip pedals, just a bit of red to set off the black and silver of the bike.
Things that I learnt yesterday:
- Riding a brand new bike at a bike park that's at the top of your limit is hard
- 800mm bars are comically wide, I coped, but feels so odd
- Ditto thumb shifters. What do I do with my index finger now?
- Â
- going from 26" wheels up to a mullet setup is weirdddd
- You can do the top drop off on Super Swooper really slowly, can't recommend that tho
- Ditto all the other Super Swooper drop offs really
Had a great time tho, really relaxed on a Thursday. Staff were great. The lady running the uplift kept giving me riding tips as she should see how terribly I was doing at the bottom sections. Mostly just rode Lovely Dyfi and a bit of Super Swooper. Still it was great fun.
Only one crash coming stupidly high out of a berm, loosing all the grip being very off line. No major damage and hopefully I'll get another Dyfi trip in before the end of the year.
Some nice shrooms (Fly Agarics I'm fairly sure) at the turn into the woods on Lovely Dyfi (the split).
WRT the bars, give them a couple of months, then start to cut them down slowly. 800mm is too wide for most people.
WRT rolling the top drop off of Super Swooper, you're a braver man than me...
Happy new bike day!
Love the S series bikes.
Would echo the above re bar width.
Talk about in at the deep end, respect is dueÂ
*fistbump*
Soooooo jealous !!!! Nice job and enjoy. !
Do you get free entry to the bike park if your turn up on an Atherton ?
Â
I see you said going from 26" wheels, so that means this bike must be a big difference in every way!
Â
Last year I went from 26" to 29".Â
Â
The differences I found were - big wheels allow you to mash through anything. Modern tyres have loads more grip. Avg speed is much higher than on 26". Modern geometry is so forgiving and saves you from so many over the bars moments
Â
800mm wide bars is way too much. I think I immediately cut to 780 and then went down to 770.

Definitely going to cut them down to 780.
It was a mistake rolling it. I only did it once. Went too slowly, no idea how I didn't crash.Â

Bike looks sweet. Must be weird to fast forward geometry and bike development 20+ years!

I very much like your style

My last bike was from 2008 and I rode that lots till about 2016 and then drifted away till about 2023. So yeah it's a big change. Also the quality and size of trails at bike parks is a massive difference to Penhydd or Y Wal which were my main trails back in the day.
It is such a lush bike.
Â
I have been multiple times to Dyfi and still haven't done that drop, kudos to you! Bike looks amazing.
