You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I fancied another CX bike, mainly so I can have 2 for this season to keep me going through the muddy part of the season and also looking to the future when son No.1 moves up to U14 and National he'll need 2 bikes and there's a fair chance that with a bit of stem and seatpost adjustment my bikes will fit him.
So, taking advantage of the Wiggle sales and the extra 10% off code they were running I bought myself another Vitus Energie Evo CR, bizarrely it cost £400 less than the exact same model I bought 2 years ago!
It's all Rival 1x with the exception of the cassette which is Sunrace and I've had no complaints about that on the other one, I've changed the wheels from the stock Novatech / Alex combo to a set of Fulcrum DB6's, the tyres from the Maxxis All Terrain to my preferred Vittoria's and also teh seat post and saddle from the supplied boat anchor of a FSA Gossamer and narrow Vitus thingie to a Tossek carbon post and a Spesh' Power saddle. It's first outing will be this weekend up in Barnoldswick at the NWCCA.
Im conflicted.. hate cyclocross, but love the bike!
I guess you may as well have a nice one to make up for the misery of a cx event!!
Nice bike. I use one as my "gravel" bike. Changed to AXS 2x, and bigger tyres. it's ace!
They are mega value. What was the code? I've got a friend who has been looking at these.
That looks nice Steve. I bought the frameset only they are selling and have it just built for Sat. Full bike looked better value but I had a grx groupset in decent nick.
@mos the code was SALE10 it might not be valid anymore.
@garry_lager I never really got on with the GRX I had on my gravel bike, I don't like the whole brake blade moving when you shift gear. The Vitus' are everywhere, I guess its for a reason 😉
Bought a used Colnago CX World Cup a few months ago and love it. OK wont take racks etc but its blooming quick.
Lovely bike BTW.
I suspect a mate of mine will try and badger me into racing at some point.
@fossy cx bikes aren't meant to take racks, they're not much use in a muddy town park in January 😁
I have dusted down the CX bike too. Fitted 11 speed and some “gravel” Schwalbe G One Speeds. Also killed a cheap Mini-V brake so went back to the carbon cantis. Weight is 8.5 kilos all up. What does that one weigh for reference? Is that light for gravel? it’s nothing special for CX. I may, and I only say it gently, race our Hillingdon Central League race in November.
@TiRed on my digital fishing scales it weighs 8.46kg thats in a size medium / 55cm frame as it in the CX set up, it'll be a smidge more with gravel tyres, cages etc but still under 9kg, which is more than respectable in my book.
There's easy weight loss on the bike, the bars and stem are bogo FSA Omega so made from some kind of lead alloy 😉 the cranks obviously aren't the lightest at 799g (complete) compared to the Quarq carbons I have on the other one @ 481g + ring and sider so maybe 150g saving there and you could run carbon hoops with tubs an drop a shit load of weight from the hoops, but frankly I CBA'd
Love the colour of that frame. I'd swap the bartape to Fizik or Deda dual colour to match the fade. Mine won't get much lighter - titanium frame, SRAM red road cranks (38T and 11-28 on the back), but has Thomson seat post and standard Ritchey Comp bars and stem. Wheels are handbuilt Dura Ace on with CX33 rims. Was hoping for sub-eight kilos, but that's not going to happen without spending a decent chunk on new bits.
That's lovely that is, really nice bike.

You know what, that's a bloody good idea, but black tape is always a win on a CX bike as they just get hammered and rather dirty.

That's the thing, I could throw another grand at each bike to drop maybe half a kilo on each, but it's not going to win anything other than being lighter that before! It might matter more when Son No.1 uses them as by the time he'll be tall enough to ride them I very much doubt he's going to weigh more than 60kg and proportionally it makes more sense to have the lightest set of hoops & tyres possible on there.
Terreno Wets are great tyres but don't ruin them on tarmac if you plan to race them.
I used the 'Mix' tyre for winter gravel and cx 'training' rides. Obviously not as good in very slippy wet stuff but still a good, fun all-rounder.
Edit: sorry, re-read your post, you're obviously familiar with the tyres if you've used them before...
@13thfloormonk don't worry, the only tarmac they see is if there are any sections in the race, or riding from the carpark to the course, I run Pathfinders for gravel type duties and 32mm Roubaix Pro 2Blioss for big slick winter tarmac action
Bike looks tidy AF.
Wish i was young/fit enough to make something like that sing.
I've just bought one of those exact same bike and its an ace one to ride! Do have a different set of wheels for racing thankfully, those ones on there aren't great
Sadly mine has a weird, loud click on each seated climbing pedal rotation so its going back. 🙁 (Tried all the usual guff, different pedals, grease seat clamp, saddle, bolt checks etc)
Gutted to be missing that Barnoldswick race. Hope you have a good one and no similar issues
Hopefully get it back soon.

Sounds like the bottom bracket if you ask me
