Hiya,

My road bike chains have these nasty deposits on it. Not sure what they are / if I can remove.

The following received a shite spirit bath, wash and scrub, wire wool and then degreaser treatment. But as you can still see, lots on it.

dirty chain

What am I looking at, corrosion? Diesel particulates?

Cheers, Alex

No picture for me either....link's bust.

It's probably a combination of road grime & whatever lube you're using. In days gone by I was using 3 in 1 on the recumbent chain. It ended up covering the transmission in what looked like coal. Took a lot of shifting with a wire brush & neat degreaser.

I'll get in first: squirt lube.

Using muck-off chain lube too? Its the worst thing ever if you don't thoroughly degrease and reapply VERY regularly - turns into blobs of tar.

Much better alternatives available.

Hmmn, annoying about the image.

I'm using ProGold Xtreme on the road bike. Had loads left over from when you couldn't get Rock'n'Roll...

Agree, mic off lubes are poor show IME.

Road grime mixed with chain lube. Turns to tar-like deposits. Totally normal.

Try brake cleaner. Not all degreasers are created equal....

@ajt123

This site converts the Google Photos "copy link" into a format you can use on here with the IMG tags.👍

@ajt123

On my android.

Click share symbol on pic you want, click "create link". That copies it.

Then paste that into that site I link to.

Let it work then MAKE SURE YOU COPY THE WHOLE LINK IT GENERATES,PART IS HIDDEN! You need to "select all" in the"direct image link" box, then "copy".

Then just use the IMG tags in this site, then job done.
