Afternoon all. New rear wheel time.

Not sure I need the width of the EX511 (running 2.4 max on the rear, though usually on maxxis WT), and hopeful to avoid any additional rotating weight of at all possible.

So EX471 or 511? Is the latter actually stronger? Or is just wider and perhaps less ding prone because of that.

Hard hitting 130mm 29er, rimpact strip, EXO plus casing, 13.5 stone with kit. Fast, Rocky lakes and Peak riding.

Yes. Aware of Aaron Gwin on the 471.

Any thoughts from the collective? Cheers in advance!

I’d only go wider on the back if you were having squirming issues at your preferred pressure and tyre size.

Ta for that. No squirming since running rimpact, which I would continue regardless. I’ll be coming from a flow MK3 though which is similar width to the 511.

Really depends what tyre you might run in the future.
I've had a Maxxis 2.4 on a 23mm and its squirmy, a bigger tyre like a Schwalbe 2.35 is very squirmy.
The 25mmm 571 should be fine but if myou want to ruin something wider later you might wish you'd gone a little wider?

Only had mine a short time but anecdotally the XM481 is good for that kind of riding and considered quite tough. A little lighter than 511 at same width. Best of both worlds?

Thought about 481. But really want the strongest I can get too. Had enough faff with a recent wheelbuild on a flow mk3 which went baggy on first ride, then after shop re-tensioned, went baggy again and out of shape, both on the first non tech downhill of the ride. Different shop building it up this time (NWMTB).

Cheers for inputs thus far, v useful.

Just be aware it's harder to fit a Rimpact in a 25mm rim.

Maybe 511 rear and 481 front?

I've a 511 up front and it's bombproof. I've 2 rears with 471s they're also bombproof.

Heavy but solid and shrug off my direct riding style.

The 511 likes to stand up and is a bit more work to lean over. (One of the 471 was originally on the front and rebuilt onto an old pro2 Evo)

I have both (as rears) and really can't tell the difference on the trail. Sorry, that doesn't really help, does it?

If I was buying I'd probably go 511 these days.

Another vote for 481 front 511 rear.

Also - if you’re running WT tyres, 30mm is the obvious choice. 25mm is too narrow.

Got an EX471 on the back of my Soul, replacing a WTB KOM i25 which was made from cheese. I'm significantly lighter than you, but similar riding style and no suspension to take the sting out of hits. There's not been many rides that I don't feel the back rim at some point, but so far not a mark on it, I'm running 2.2/2.3 ish sized tyres, and the shape seems pretty good.

(I've got 30mm internal rims on my full sus, but with 2.4/2.5 tyres. Similar shape, just bigger. Jury is currently out on whether I'll need to rebuild them with DTs - they seem a bit soft!)

Cheers All. Food for thought. Interesting re rimpact and the potential downsides of fitting. Maybe it could be a bit more supportive on a slightly narrower rim. Hmm

I just feel the industry pushing wider is not necessarily the only/best way.

I think wider on the front has merit, particularly if you run a WT 2.5 tyre. Not so clear on the rear to me.
