Finally got around to planning a ride over Nan Bield. I've walked the south side and that looked pretty good but I haven't seen the north side at all (although I reckon it does look a better descent on the map). So, for anyone who's ridden it before, which direction would you say is the better? Also, for the sake of a good circular route, what's Gatesgarth like to ride? Cheers
drop darn past small water to res at bottom best way imo
descend in a southerly direction
Gatescarth is mostly ridable if you have the legs. Ive seen people nearly clear it.
Did nan bield not so long ago, and while out were discussing doing this route soon....this way, you get to do both sides.
Start in kentmere. Go up the valley and ascend nan bield to the top. Drop down the north side-->haweswater. Back up gatescarth and over harter fell to the top of nan bield again. descend the south side back to kentmere. 🙂
Then you can add in garburn if you wanted.
Thanks. I think I'll probably go for the north side. If Danny Mac can ride it then it must be easy...
Oh, only just seen your post mrh86. Sounds like a good idea - we'll just have to be extra polite to any walkers. I suppose it'd be good to cut out that long section of track into Longsleddale
Though the descent down to sadgil is quite tasty as well, so you wouldnt get to do that. You could still get up to nan bield the first time via longsleddle and harter fell. descend the north side, back up gatescarth, over harter fell (again), then down the south side.
When i say gatescarth is ridable if you have the legs, i mean from south to north. not sure about the other way, ive never been up it from haweswater. They've been busy with the draining channels/massive humps descending it to haweswater. they slow you down quite a bit as they are rather large and at a very strange angle.
I can afford to miss Sadgill as I live really nearby. That's what makes it embarrassing that I haven't ridden Nan Bield before!
Neither, hike a bike ,once and never again.great climb and descent into haweswater then in my opinon the ride goes down hill fast!!!!
I've just got back from doing it today for the first time...epic stuff!
Started Sadgil, up and over Gatescarth, as said above, awkward waterbars do throw you off line a bit.
Massive carry up Nan bield - is the north side really ridable as a down?..not by me it aint!
Up, over and down into Kentmere is a cracker though, worth the carry imo, which I enjoyed too in perverse way..
I rode down the North side on Monday it was amazing as the photosshow...
Sorry, but only a riding god could ride down what I carried up.I ll come out and carry up again to watch someone bag it!!!
Done nan bield a few times and would deffo descend the southern side. Slow and technical at the top then as you go down it opens up and the speed increases.
Those photos look great! Can't make up my mind now...
Great ride & scenery - bit of a carry up from the lake though.

some bumff here, best descended on the Kentmere side, locals tend to use the path over Harter fell from Gatesgarth. 😉
(cough thats me, behind DM in the second picture) 😀
