You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've always been an advocate of many bikes. Right tool for the job is the justification. However, I've worn them all out now, switching to the 'next best' each time until they are all knackered, swapping bits around, that sort of thing.
I can't afford to fix them all (possibly just one).
So do I flog them all and start again with one-bike-does-all, flog all but one and spend the cash on a major revamp, or mothball all but one and get it functional again? And which one?
Choices are:
Rigid singlespeed - 853 inbred
Geared hardtail - 1994 tinbred
Full susser - Trance X4 about 3 years old
Road bike - Coppi Dure Ace / Ultegra now 10 years old
SS gets most use as is cheap to maintain, road bike has seen a fair bit of use recently as the weather is so shit. Others only really used for big summer rides / weekends up country, but hugely enjoyed.
I always find the most boring bikes get the most use.
Road bike (least bling one)
Cheep (Rigid SS) MTB
Everything else is progresively more niche (big expensive AM bike or summer road bike for example) get progressively less usage.
I'd not sell unless it's really not getting used and taking up needed space, bikes are rarely worth more than they are to the current owner, you could sell the tance and have enough money to buy a new set of forks and groupset, so what's the point? May as well keep it.

Boring bikes often give the most excitement!
So if I mothball some, which one to keep going?

What you really mean is that it's the most fun, otherwise you'd have cannibalised it.
So keep that one going first, then the raod bike since it's ver different, & mothball the others until you've found the right 2nd hand parts to fix them.
ah the downward spiral - i built my bikes with blingy XT throughout - now it gets replaced with deore and second hand parts 🙁
I would mothball the geared hardtail... Leaves nice big contrast of singlespeed hardtail or the full sus...

I tried that, Pitch and Singular Swift. Problem is the swift will go up small hills like a rocket, the pitch like plodding up big ones, but neither's ideal for just riding on normal hills!
