With the new clutch mech I now have a stealth bike.
Bound to cost me money I recon.

Pawls and springs? Shouldn't cost a lot to fix.

Snapped paw springs or loads of crud
But easy and cheap either way

Opps to slow

how does a clutch mech make a pro2 quiet? Surely freewheeling will let it make that earcracking jarr?

Or is it broken in some way?

mine did that about 3 yrs ago, with the same diagnosis of doom and gloom. pawls and springs were fine and are still fine 3 yrs later though it went back to its usual volume after being dismantle and reassembled.

Just take the freehub off and take a look.

You should have a look at that. If there are little bits of broken spring floating around they will cause damage

Not just damage, possibly a long walk with a freewheeling bike too.

Yep, a few quid for new springs now, or potentially having to send your wheel back to Hope to get a new ratchet fitted to the hub later.

Disassemble now while it's easy!

My Fulcrum hub went silent, it lasted the ride but engagement was a bit slow towards the end.

My Pro 2 sometimes goes quiet when I've been out in the rain for a while, should really get around to stripping it and giving it a good clean. Maybe a new seal too.

Mine went quiet had a look in and I was only running on 1 pawl. Have a look in there, may save a loooong walk.

It's nice and simple to check. Hope sent me free replacements when mine went (and more free reoplacements when those went in rather short order!)

TBH it's worth removing the freehub from time to time and giving it a clean anyway, the "seal" between the shell and hub is pretty poor, more of a shield than a seal. Helps keep everything ticking over nicely.

I don't know if Hope changed their supplier, but their springs don't seem to last long.

I put in some pieces of foam instead and its been running fine.

Happened to me in France last summer, (no Hope dealers in Aveyron) 2 springs broken and 1 pawl missing completely. Previous owner said it had just been serviced by LBS. Aren't cable ties BRILLIANT!

its worth pulling the freehub off every few months just to stop it siezing onto the axle if nothing else.

I also had the problem with springs breaking frequently but the last set have lasted ages, maybe just a dodgy batch

Hah. This thread is useful, I just remembered that there's a cable-tie-spring in the set in my DH bike. Should really sort that.

I'd be suprised if Hope were making these 7 years ago. Still on XC's back then.

"Mine did the same, took apart regreased"

Hope recommend oil, not grease. As do I.

2 snapped springs and one paw missing.
A little bit of 3in1 and now back to 110 decibels.
🙂

Might just be water - happened to mine years ago when I jet washed it.

Not sure oil is the way on pro 2's as the 'seal' ahem is as sealing of water going in as oil pouring out. Just cover everything with a bit of waterproof grease and check and clean regulary unless they design something to keep the muck and water out, is what I do.

Or it might be 2 snapped springs and a missing pawl? 😉
