I've got a Pike fitted to my S150crs and I'm having issues setting it up.
This is the spec taken from the Whyte site:
RockShox Pike RC 29", 150mm Travel, 42mm Offset, DebonAir, Charger 2 Damper, Fast Black Coating, Tapered Steerer, 110mm x 15mm Boost, Maxle Ultimate
So I've got the sag set perfect however the fork is blowing it's travel but then ramps up really hard at the end ??
Rebound feels horrible too and it's a click between too fast and too slow.
The bike hasn't done many miles however it was secondhand so not sure if it's been serviced or not.
Any ideas ??
the fork is blowing it’s travel but then ramps up really hard at the end
Have you tried adding a token or two and then setting the sag again?
And, how much sag is "perfect" for you? I find 25% works best on mine.
yes its set up poorly - don't go by sag % firstly.
Take all the tokens out and put enough air in to get 25% sag as a starting point with LSC fully open.
set rebound by compressing and trying to lift the fork off the ground before it rebounds. If you can manage that you have too much rebound.
Then go for a ride and see how the fork behaves for 0-75% of travel. adjust air pressure as required and redo rebound. Then adjust end stroke by adding a token if required.
Bit more compression damping and remove a token if there are any fitted?
Slim chance of a blocked transfer port meaning the air chamber pressures are out of whack? Does it suck down if you let the pressure out?
As a base, I would follow Poah's method
That's pretty much how I set up my DVOs in a roundabout way
Sounds exactly like it has too many tokens in and not enough air pressure.
Cheers all.
I've just let the air out and they didn't sink but when I went to remove the top cap to check how many tokens are fitted I've realised I need a special tool now !!
Assuming they're the newer ones, it's just a cassette lock ring tool.
Ah cool ok. Thanks
Now I've got another issue with them and not sure if it's right or not.
When I attach my shock pump (genuine rs) it isn't showing any air pressure on the gauge until I add a few pumps ??
Is this normal or is it indicating that I have an issue ?
Also forgot to add that I am just over max air pressure to get 30% sag.
I am 114kgs though.
Maybe the valve doesn’t open until some air flow happens? Doubt it’s an issue.
You don't actually say what PSI you are running. Max to get 30% sag??!!!
I say forget sag altogether. I can get 5-10% variation in fork sag in successive attempts to measure it.
Check how many tokens fitted first. Try recommended air pressure with rebound test as described above. Go from there.
I'm 90 odd kilos on an old pike. If I was running max PSI it would feel like a rigid fork!
I'm running 140psi currently and it still doesn't reach 30% sag.
Max pressure on the fork sticker says 148psi !!
It still feels spongy and I can hit max travel just by pushing down hard on the bars.
Every other pike I've had has registered pressure when you scrww the pump on which is why I found it weird ?
IIRC when adding psi you should boing the fork a couple of times and then recheck psi / sag as you set it. The SRAM setup guide recommends this and says why.
Ah yea - see here:
My pike ultimate 2020 I can't get right, all different config on tokens and pressure. Personally I feel the upgrade as come about probably on the fact of the number of complaints. 140mm travel is what I paid for I can't get it unless the fork is over pressured and then it feels like an absolute dog. Having to pay for a upgrade to me is an insult, admit this fork is not fit for purpose.
I go the other way on tokens, by starting with the max tokens you can, as you're a big unit. then take away if needed, might save you a bit of time, than starting zero tokens, as I sure you be adding a few. 😉
The other question is how many clicks are you away from max rebound? (slowest setting)
If it is only one or 2 clicks (due to high air pressure) I would maybe see if you can it it re valved and get a service as well (tf tuned etc) to make sure everything is OK, lest you know and not chasing your tail so to speak to find out later, that something not right in the fork.

Suggests charger 2.1 compression damping very soft therefore not suitable for heavier riders. Sortable with tune.
Annoyed as waiting on a bike with new pike ultimate and so I may be in the same position shortly.
