No, get your mind out of the gutter. 🙂

My helmet has become so ripe, I can smell it as soon as I enter the garage. It gets aired after every ride, and the lining may have been cleaned two years ago. However years of sweat, grime, mud and rain are taking its toll on the lining. It now smells like camebert that has been left on a car dashboard on the hottest day of the year.

Can some hot soapy water save it or is that Foam fresh stuff from Muc-Off any good? Or is time to replace the lid and clean the lining more often in future? Are you not supposed to replace helmets every few years anyway, damaged or not?

I just chuck the padding in the washing machine with my other kit every so often, typically when I can start to smell it.

I've used Foam Fresh on my extremely ripe helmet and it did the job but it did take 3 or 4 applications. If that didn't work the next plan was to thrown the pads in the washing machine on a cool wash and/or put them in the freezer to kill the bacteria.

Never had mine smell, but I just wash it in the shower with shower gel periodically, and replace the pads when needed.

I've discovered the delights of using 'Halo' washing liquid on my cycling gear and it really does stop the festering.

If you can remove the padding and wash in water/Halo it may help?

Wash the pads in the sink with a bit of fairy liquid. Same with the straps and wipe the interior with a cloth.
