Just got my fork (2012 SID) back from TF - it's losing air and they tell me that there damage to the stanchions beyond the seals, and that spares are no longer available. It's tapered, so at least I can source a new fork if need be.

But Being that old, if I went for a new fork, my wheel would not fit. It's a Hope Pro2 hub with 100mm QR from yesteryear.

I'm loathe to splash out on a new fork on such an old bike (as much as I love it), especially as I am not sure whether that would require a brand new wheel as well, or just an adapter kit and re-dish.

fwiw - bike is an On_One carbon race. I do race it, I did the SDW Double on it and I love it for longer days in the saddle....so would be sad to see it go.

what would SDW do?

Or has anyone got an inexpensive SID 29 for sale!?

About £15 for the adaptors to turn your hub into a 15mm bolt through.

You can get ND Tuned stanchions if you really want to fix the fork (will need bushings as well if the stanchion is damaged)

http://www.ndtuned.com/en/bainhas.php

I would carefully cost up repair/replacement options, how much money you want to spend on an old fork that something else may break on and not be available etc.

If you can get a replacement fork for a reasonable price a new fork and a new pair of end caps for the Hope hub seems like a sensible solution.

As above, adapters are cheap and easy, you can also easily boost a pro2 front with proper adapters.

Think it has to be the evo hub to boost up and the wheel will need a 're dish

I'm pretty sure it'll boost, not sure if there was any real difference on the front Hope hubs.

Rigid fork?

Front hubs are identical.
Redish may not be needed, but if it is, takes 10 minutes
Have just converted a qr Mavic to boost with eBay adapters. No redish was needed. Could’ve put both spacers on one side and not spaced the disc, would have then had to redish the rim 2.5mm to non disc side. About one turn per spoke?

Pro 2, pro 2 Evo and pro 4 fronts are basically the same hub with same bearings and end cap options.

OH...I don't know what to do now.

I really like the bike. But it is ageing, old standards.

Looks like I can probably source a non boost reba from the Germans - but even that is £350. and I would need endcaps to go to 15mm - £20.

Or update an 8 year old fork with new stanchions.

How much of a weight disadvantage would a 100mm reba have over a 100mm (2012 SID) roughly? Night and day? Am struggling to find quoted weights.

Or get a boost SID. Boost and re-dish the wheel. But then we are looking £500-£600 parts on an 8 year old bike.

New 2021 hardtail for racing (but also all day riding). What's out there?
Spesh Epic HT? - great geo, crap spec for money
Radon - great value but struggling to find reviews. no chance to swing a leg over.
Trek ProCaliber - my mate just bought one and looks decent.
Scott Scale - Felt a bit harsh when I rode one.

Or, is it time to race on a short travel FS. Orbea Oiz, Epic Evo or Transition Spur?

Money IS an object however....so I probably do have to make a sensible decision!

Is it definitely broken? Is the damage to the stanchion actually causing it to lose air or was the air loss just due to a worn o-ring?

Nothing wrong with sticking a new (or 2nd hand) boost fork on it. Boost 29 is a standard that's not going anywhere soon, and the adapters are cheap and work fine.

So it's a few hundred or more to repair or a couple of thousand or so for a new bike.just get a new fork or repair the old one.if you did get a new bike you could always get a cheap rigid to keep the bike going or saleable.

I serviced my wife’s 2011 side just last night, 37quid for a seal and oil kit from a bloke on eBay, every origin you need and right weight oils, etc.

There is no way a worn outer stantion can cause an air leak, the air chambers are inside the left leg, the bushings could have some play but likely not causing you any issues

I’d service them yourself, all you need is circling pliers and extra long 10mm socket for the negative air nut I the hollow lower legs, ping me if you want to borrow mine.

Tf WarneD me that they may not be able to solve the air leak as the stanchion was damaged. But I got them to go through with the Full service anyway as the air leak was gradual.

However, it now seems to be every ride I need a top up. I don’t think any amount of home servicing will leave them in better shape than TF has.

I’m only going on the information given to me.

Ah ok, I assumed they hadn’t serviced at all due to the wear.

Somewhat surprised that the inside of the stagnation is worn, but if they are following a full service I can’t disagree.

I have to agree with above posters, hubs are easy to convert, would be worth investing in a new fork if you like the bike

Surely the answer is simple 'New Bike'
Whatever you do to it to fix it it'll still be an old bike
So you need a 'New Bike'

@tiboy - that’s the 27.5 version. 29 way harder to find!

@royston - pretty much!

I'd also suggest checking with RSF in Plymouth as I believe they have the kit for pressing stantions and steerers as well as stuff being broken for spares.
Not used them myself, but mates have.

Dave at RSF is great, he is the steerer and stanchion replacement king, I also believe he is the importer of ND Tuned parts.

Put a wanted add on the classifieds for some 29er sids, Im sure someone will have something.

I've probably got some hope pro 2 front adapters and a boost kit on my spares bin. Pm me if you are interested. However, if you do go boost, but the hope boost adapters, trey are brilliant, you can't tell the difference and you don't have a fiddly 2.5mm spacer to mess about with or drop!

Or sell your bike, spares or repairs and buy this

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBOOWHSX/on-one-whippet-sram-sx-mountain-bike

Rigid carbon fork and £200 off. If you chat with them they might do a deal on a suspension fork if they have any.

I've got a 100mm travel SID, sat doing nothing. Its a 15mm thru axle, but non boost 100mm spacing.

I think that just needs new end caps on your hub, no playing around with wheel dishing and disc brake spacers. But someone else could confirm this is the case for the pro2? (I have pro 2 evos and pro 4s).

@ayjaydoubleyou - this could fit the bill very nicely. Do you want to DM me with a photo, and what you may want for it please? Also how long is the steerer tube please? I need something around the 20cm mark.

Pretty sure I can change the end caps.
