What can I replace it with for getting them to school? 😀
a bike?
A bike would get me there but I would have to get the 2 kids there aswell. If you are saying 3 bikes then not possible.
Anyone got experience of a Bakfiets going up and down hills with 2 children?
2 tag alongs.
how big? Ute?
could you make something like this?
Pashley "U plus 2" tandem trailer trike?
Discontinued, but often appear on Ebay
One of those Kona Utes with the kids sitting on the board at the back?
Or if you're minted look up Harry v Larry Bullit. My long term child transit solution - if I can find the £££
What age are the kids?
How far is it and how are they progressing with riding their own bikes?
I have one who is probably still ok to go in the trailer, just about, but her new wee sister is going to take that spot in a few weeks when mum goes back to work and I am doing the morning runs.
She is on an intensive training programme at the minute, but doesn't know it. She has completed 5 mile spins with tough uphill sections at a decent enough pace for a 4 1/2 year old. She only needs to do just over 1 mile at race pace.
This is more important than kiddy racing, but i reckon she will mill the field once I let her loose at that in a year or so.
😈
Thanks for the ideas.
They are 4 and 2. 4 year old can ride a bike and I expect would be OK to ride to school with me giving him support/ attention. 2 year old goes with me on commute to school and comes back.
I have a LOCT child seat so maybe that + tag along? (or LOCT + trailer ) I do fancy a cargo bike type setup though as I could just chuck them in it with their breakfast and get to school on time!
Larry vs Harry is out of my budget by a long way but very nice. The u plus 2 I haven't seen before and looks good also.
I was looking at tag-a-long plus seat, but factoring in wet weather and dark evenings, coupled with a savagely hilly route, I bit the bullet today and bought a car 🙁
Thee must be cheaper versions of that Larry vs Harry available - you see that style of bike all over cities like Amsterdam with a couple of kids in the front.
If you google/eBay search "bakfiets" you'll get cheaper Dutch ideas. Fair bit heavier though. And not as cool.
There's actually a pashley U plus 2 on ebay at the moment.. looks flipping ace
Wow! ^^^ That weehoo is brill...

I have a car and use it too much for the short trip to/from school. I'm hoping that a trailer or bike that kept the kids dry and was easy to use would mean I'd no longer be tempted by the car. The (very vintage) Burley trailer I'm using at the mo is so fun and easy but it wont be long before they outgrow it.
I have a Yuba Mundo for taking my twins around.
It's a heavy old dog, but they love it and it does the job very well.
Practical cycles.com are very good, so check 'em out.
Feel free to ask questions should u have any.
Check out the Follow-me tandem.
Keeps you in control of the four-year old while they can help provide pedal assistance.
The wee one goes on the LOCT.
The only problem I had was kids squabbling over who went at the back. Also used to lug Thump around on the LOCT when he was six - in the dark back from footie etc.
I went for a Kona Ute.
Served us well.
Apologies for not putting pics straight in.
(Stupid POS Flickr seems to have hidden the BBB codes of late.)

Thanks for your posts chaps.
Takisawa/Lardman: With the Yuba and Ute what do you actually have the kids sitting on?
(Chapeau for the varied Ute usage BTW!)
StirlingCrispin, what you have there looks to be my easiest and cheapest option. I will see if my 2 year old can handle the LOCT. Only problem is my current bike to school bike has a 1" headtube. and the LOCT is 1 1/8th.
Kiddyback tandem, You'll get 10 years use out of it. Bought mine at the same stage. Rode it for 10 years. Now retired to the garage.
Honestly, the most smiles/mile of any bike I've ever owned.

When they grew, I added a tagalong to make a triplet.
My 4 year old is 112cm is that tall enough for a kiddyback? Hadn't even considered it.
This triple tandem looks fun!

Should be fine. The Dawes has a 12" frame and crank shorteners
Related question:
Is there a cheaper but similarly good equivalent to that Follow-me tandem up there? I've had a look but there only seems to be 2 variants generally available the other being the Trail Gator but it looks a bit [s]s***[/s] heath Robinson in comparison.
Ideally I want something that works well with a an Islabike Cnoc 14 and doesn't do too much damage.
Any recommendations? (or anyone got a Follow-me tandem for sale relatively cheap - if they work as well as a price suggests)
G
There is one on ebay at the mo: starting at £100

Cheers CTK, I hadn't spotted that one and watching some Youtube videos of it in action, it does look by far and a way the best in ease of use even if it is a little bit meccano in style.
