Ok so I've quit my job and am heading to Canada and California in 8 weeks for about a year! Has anyone got any good suggestions of places to ride/ climb/ visit/ races to see/ take part in/ trade shows etc
The itinary to far is Whistler for August/ Sept then head South for Moab, Mammoth, Vegas and Utah. Apart from that we're open to good ideas!

Thanks,

Gareth

If you're leaving Whistler, go down I5 to Seattle, stop at [url=

on the way then make sure to ride the [url=

bike park[/url].

The Colorado Rockies are pretty good - Aspen and Vail are fairly touristy but have good trails; Steamboat Springs and round there is also good stuff.

If you've got a road bike and like pain, the Mount Baker Highway is outstanding, the descent is even better!

Try the trails at Fruita in W. Colorado--some really great riding.
Also in CO--try Crested Butte and Durango areas.
Here in New MExico, the South Boundary trail out of Taos has one epic downhill going one direction (been known to overheat/blow fork seals) and they have just opened up an expanded, sizeable mountain biking park in Angel FIre, New Mexico.
If you want to get major "pucker" effect, check out White Mesa trails just northwest of Albquerque. You can see video at:

+1 for just about anywhere in Colorado. What you can ride will depend a lot on time of year.

Not just to ride but to see / trek etc:

Arches National Park, Moab
Bryce Canyon National Park
Canyonlands National Park
Zion National Park
Mesa Verde
Monument Valley
Grand Canyon

They wil see you through your Sep / Oct leg in Utah, Arizona, Vegas etc.

Stay in BC longer and don't just go to Whistler.

Moab yes

Colarado yes (maybe head for Crested Butte)

But Moab isn't really a winter venue (apparently but good in Autumn)

All the Colorado trails will be ski runs by Christmas.....

If your coming down through California Marin County is worth a look. The Flume Trail (Lake Tahoe) on the way to Mammoth Mountain is good. Mammoth will close to bikes sometime in September as the snows start to come. Kernville in the southern Sierras is nice. You can get a shuttle to Sherman Pass to ride the Cannel trail back to town. 9000' of downhill in about 25 odd miles. Also Santa Barbara is a cool spot with the Tunnel trail to ride. Vegas way head to Red Rock canyon to the west. There is an outpost of McGhies bikes at Blue Diamond. They will point you to the trails. Just watch out for Rattle snakes 🙂

+1 for most of colorado. Crested Butte area great, and the continental divide trails are stunning. There are bus shuttles from towns either side to the top of the ridge (we rode trail known as Monarch Crest) so you can just ride down.

Nelson BC

Squamish BC

Slight hijack but how accessible is the riding in these places without having a car to drive out of the main town/residential areas? I would like to visit more than just Whistler when I'm in Canada but it seems like everywhere else is harder to get to the trails by bike.

As for Squamish, if you can get a lift / transit there, then the trails are certainly rideable from the Sea To Sky highway. You could post something up on the NSMB forum and maybe someone will show you around.
Bearback and Ticket2Ride probably still do day trips to Squamish and Pemberton too, although lift sharing will be much cheaper.
