Hi,

Just recollecting on my last year bitter-sweet visit to Scotland.

Fond memories of Ben Lomond there 🙂

And started thinking, what would be Must-Do list of Scottish Munros?

Maybe a plan for another road trip could be hatched?

Cheers!

I.

Well there's 282 of them [atm, the number ebbs and flows a little bit], and most are fantastic to walk up, so it's tough to narrow them down!

Kintail is definitely a recommended area, just to throw one out there. When I started out hillwalking with my wife and hadn't seen much of Scotland, I remember the five sisters and the South Glen Shiel ridge being exceptionally good [7 munros in the latter and you don't drop down much at all between them].

Yeah, didn't make it very clear.

With bike, I'm not a walker type 🙂

Unless there is a hike-a-bike required, then pretty happy.

And I'm definitelly not in Danny's Skill League. Not even remotely there...

Cheers!

I.

I'm sure there was a thread on a similar theme a while back. Unfortunately a lot of the Munros are, shall we say, less than exciting, there's a good number of Corbetts that are better like Suilven.

The Five Sisters is a good one. Not done the South Glen Shiel ridge but it's one to consider. The Torridon hills, Beinn Alligin, Liathach and Beinn Eighe are worth doing. Slioch, A' Mhaighdain, Ruadh Stac Mor (two of the remotest Munros) and An Teallach. Ben Hope in the far north is wonderfully isolated as are Conival and Ben More Assynt.

Further south there's the Grey Corries, the Mamores, Aonach Eagach, Bidean nam Bian and the Arrochar Alps - Ben Ime, etc.

Edit: Biking? Scratch all that, go for the boring ones!

Mount Keen not far from Dundee has to be one of the easier Munro's to get up by bike.  I've done it, so it can't be that hard !

Oh god, where to start?

I'll try and pick a couple of favourites from each area.

Central Highlands

Binnean Mor, Kinlochleven

Ben Lawers

Honourable mentions to Ben Nevis, and some of the lower trails like the Ciaran Path and Devil's Staircase. There's plenty more though, the main one to avoid is Stob Bhan.

Western Highlands

While not necessarily munro summit riding, the whole area around Torridon is great. Ben Damph is good.

I've not got enough experience beyond that to recommend anything else around here.

Creag Meagaidh Area

I've only experience of one ride here, and would be interested to hear of more. There's a nice proper XC route round from Ardverikie to Geal Charn and back that's a good, old fashioned day out.

Eastern Highlands (Cairngorms, Grampians)

This is my favourite area to ride, it's been a bit tricky to narrow it down, but here goes.

Lochnagar

Ben Macdui

Carn an t-Sagairt Mor (although you can't actually summit, you can skirt round it and ride down Glen Callater)

Other good options include Mount Keen as a less technical ride, and I've heard that Beinn A Bhuird is particularly good.

Southern Highlands

Ben Lomond, obviously.

Ben Vorlich

Obviously, there's loads more than this. This thread is the bible for it-

Went over the horns on Beinn Alligin in February in less than great winter conditions. More exciting than I thought it would be!

A bit underwhelmed by Vorlich tbh (the loch earn one, not lomond) was all over a bit too quickly. Ledi was far more fun, though I reckon it's been sanitised a bit since last year.

I've still not done Ledi. It's been on my to-do list for years as my mate Pete rides it all the damn time.

I am visiting friends in Bonar Bridge in July. Am I right in thinking that the Golspie trails take in a Munro?

Golspie. Nah. Take you up about 4 or 500m if I remember right.

All the munros E of Glenshee are fun on a bike (Creag Leacach maybe not). Lochnagar and its two satellites (the 2nd one T-Saghairt is pronounced Taggart so I just call it that and is worth the small diversion to the summit area to check out the crashed Canberra).

Ben a Ghlo, An Socach, Beinn a Bhuird, Ben Avon Descent off NE edge of plateau good, Devil's Point, Carn a Mhaim and Derry Cairngorm are crackers too.
