Just been out on the North York Moors today .... snaking about with no grip in the mud!
So need to dump the Schwalbe Rocket Rons for some decent mud/winter tyres. Can I please have some recommendations, thank you.

I swopped from Trailrakers to Bonty Mud x a few months ago. For out and out mud the Trailrakers are better, for everything else the Mud X's are best

Seems a big thumbs up for the Bonty Mud Xs then 😉

Also, after doing some googling, the WTB VelociRaptor [with a front & rear specific] seems to be getting some good reveiews, anyone with any experience of them?

I found the Velociraptors slow and dragging in the dry and not particularly good in the mud. Clogged too easily and then just slid around.

Schwalbe Dirty Dan's have really impressed me. Super grippy, excellent in slippery mud and still good on rocks/roots and the real bonus, they don't feel slow.

I don't really notice much difference in speed between them and nobby nics.

most tyres are going to be better than a Rocket Ron!

You might not need a full on mud tyre, maybe nobby nics would be enough? If you want xc tyres then panaracer fire xc pro?

Got some Panaracer CG soft conditions recently and they are very good too. Reasonable volume and grippy

Just ordered a set of Bonty Mud Xr from JE James.
£24 each [inc delivery] seems a decent price for this greatly reveiwed tyre.
Thanks all for input.

Been out in a group of 5 today - the 3 of us who had mud-x tyres were noticeably quicker over the muddy/rooty sections ( and I'm not quick, by any standards)
Couldn't say which tyres the other two had though.

Gotta love em, for the confidence they inspire.

Put my mud x on the other week. Ran them a few times last year on my xc FS bike and they made a good impression. Put them on the HT this time and they didn't feel that great over roots and lumpy bits. Maybe it's the lower volume compared to what I'm use to on the HT. Was running tubeless at about 30psi. First ride in the drying sticky mud with winter rubber though which I suppose will feel a bit rubbish. Shall have to experiment a bit.

Bonty muds on hardtail
Swamp things on Full sus (42A on the front 60A on the back)
Muds offer a lot less drag with excellant grip in mud and on roots.

Usually use mudx but thought i'd give spesh control storms a go, a slightly better and faster tyre IMO, and easier to fit tubeless.

Wouldn't recommend nobby nics.. Nearly went arse over tit a few times on a muddy descent from the Kilpatricks yesterday.. Proper squeaky bum moments..

I run Halo Knobblers in the mud - i'm well impressed, and they are only about £12 each...

Another one for mud x's here. Great tyre and a cracking price. I think they only came off the bike for about 3 weeks last year...

First year I've switched to mud specific tyres and I went for Trailrakers. Can't compare them to other mud tyres but they grip like buggery in the claggy stuff we currently have round here and loving the way that when they do let go they do so predictably and controllably until they dig through and find some more grip. Not so good (to the point of being terrifying) on exposed wet roots though.

I agree. The Trailrakers are the best in pure mud, but twitchy on roots and rocks. I have just damaged the sidewall on my rear Trailraker, so ordered two Mud X yesterday.

There is a good review on mud/winter tyres in last months Dirt Mag (No 118).

mud-x is my mud tyre of choice but i have to say it's biggest failing is poor rear traction even on shallow climbs.

I use Bonty Mud X's 2.0 all year round - great tyre & just ordered two more today.

I can't stand a Mud X on the front, the lack of grip on some types of rock just put me off completely, I'd sooner use a regular knobbly and struggle slightly more in mud, than have a Mud X and do fine in mud (the crap part) and have trouble everywhere else (the good part) personally.

Swampthing is more consistent, but slow as a dead dog. Specialized's Hillbilly is fantastic for wet techy/harder riding but it's a downhill dualply with all the disadvantages that brings with it.

Used swamp thing today. Taking it off, prefer less grip to that! Very grippy but is sooooo slow

I got a pair of 60a Swamphings off here. Got one on the front and have been too lazy to take the Advantage off the back up till now.
I can see they'd be hard work front and rear.

I think I might have been following your tracks. Came down to Milton via the Crags walk past the quarry yesterday, around 3ish.
Interesting wee 10 minutes slipping down the "path" between the 2 barbed wire fences. Proper thick, claggy mud.
The Swampthing did fine, the Advantage less so.

Specialized Storm - can't recommend enough. Not too draggy, plenty of grip in loose dirt and wet mud, clears really well, decent volume for a 2.0.

I've got a couple of pairs of Mud X's that are surplus to requirements ... probably covered 30 miles on each set ... say 30 quid a pair posted?

Similar experience here - good for general riding, not for mud! 😯

I can't decide what to get and I'm very impatient and want to build my new wheels up. Can get MudXs through Tritonor Cycle Surgery will price match but won't get either until early next week. Been loking at the Storms as a cheaper alternative sand lcoally sourced as an alternative but can't find the weight anywhere - anybody know?

OW & rewski,
my two-penneth on mud x and storm control:

Mud X - I'm running 2 of these on the HT with Crests, Stans tape and gunk.
Went up first time with track pump.
Quite a tight fit.

Storm - I'm running this on the rear of the FS on a Flow, Stans tape and gunk.
Had a bit of faf getting this to inflate with the track pump but soon realised that it was the "whiskers" from the moulding process that were just enough to stop the tyre initially sealing to the shoulder. I trimmed these off cleanly and the tyre then went up first time with the track pump.
Tight fitting. Much more volume than a mud X, even though both are nominally 2.0"

been running a Conti Baron on the front for a month or so - cheating amounts of grip, even in the proper filth

Hi Magoo,

I'll take a set of MudX off your hands if they are still going spare. I'll drop you an email.

Cheers,
Mark.

Just received the Bonty Mud XR's [as they're now called] from JE James [great price & service - they got my order yesterday and delivered today - even gave me a time within an hour as to when they'd be delivered - top marks to them].

Anyway, fitted to rims [by eck the 2.0's do look skinny compared to my Schwalbe 2.35's] but cann't wait to try them out at weekend to see if they're as good as everyone's raving about.

+1 on Dirty Dans. It has to be properly gopping before I take the Speed Kings off though.

Loved my mud x last winter on the full susser and could quite easily run them all year. This winter on the HT they don't seem to give quite as much grip over wet roots and rocks, so experimenting with a grippy XR4 up front and mud x on the back.

Black Shark Mud's if you can still get them, failing that Dirty Dan's! Used them on the natural stuff at cannock last weekend and never had a problem and believe me it was muddy!! 😀

I've just tried the Panaracer CG soft conditions and am very happy with them.
The 2.1 size cuts through mud and provides pretty good grip on hardback also.

can catch them if they slip easier than the all round trail tyres (Spesh Eskars, Mountain Kings) I've tried

Conti Baron for me.

Good in both mud and on roots.

Wouldn't like to say whether they are better value than the mud-x given the price of the Baron's.

Agreed with that man - Black Shark Mud tyres are superb and we only have a couple left and contemplation keeping them for ourselves. Otherwise Dirty Dans are mighty impressive. We got some Hans Dampf tyres in, which are supposed to be all-rounders so can't wait to try them...

Just come back from Cycle Surgery with the intention of buying a Storm Control and have walking out with MudX at £12 under RRP. I love LBS' that price match.
