Like my Mudhugger, like the use of zipties less so.
I had some Polaris Velcro straps that looked likely, so did a bit of experimenting.
Measured width of straps and drilled some holes in a line with a 2.5mm bit.
Finished off the slots with a small hacksaw blade and a small file.
For the others I used a coping saw to make indents of the correct size.
Fitted the straps nice and tight (and used one zip-tie per side just in case 😉)
Rode 45km mostly off-road and it didn't move a mm. Jobs a good un, and makes much more sense than loads of zip-ties.
I widened some of the cable tie slots on mine to use velcro, same reasons. But I couldn't get it that tight, and some of the slots split, so went back to cable ties. This looks better.
Why not just use re useable cable ties?

Because I already had the velcro straps?
I would've had to buy reusable zip-ties, and normally they're wider, so would probably need to enlarge the holes.

In my head having the holes further up meant more overlap/length for the velcro, so probably more secure?
Got a V2 with the velcro straps. Doesn't seem quite as secure as zip ties.

I use velcro wherever possible for this though, although it does wear out from the mud eventually.

Ha, yes, up to a point. Probably get 3-4 goes on them before it doesn't work properly.
Mudhuggers are ace.

From my perspective the problem of them "cutting" into the frame unless they are adequately protected,

Partly environmental - yes, you can potentially re-use zip-ties, but not always, and it's extra plastic waste in the end.
Being able to swap the guard onto another bike much more easily. I have 2 Mudhuggers and 4 bikes they can fit, I'd rather not spend £50 on another 2 mudguards.
Safety - I have a lovely scar on my calf from the end of a zip-tie used to secure a cable outer onto a seat stay. There's plenty of potential for zip-tie based injury from all those used on a Mudhugger.

So I can get the bike in the car without it bending out of shape and swap between bikes quickly
