The mudhugger rear seems to excel at two things, keeping the mud off you and completely destroying you paint work, I’ve taped up the offending area and now it’s worn through that. I also have a issue with the cable ties working loose. I’m about to do a new build on a fancy new frame and don’t want to be repeating the same mistake. What rear fender are people running on 29ers?

Crudcatcher on the seatpost not perfect but generally hassle free.

Mudhugger but with proper protective tape. I use duct tape, seems to work, but ugly.

Not my experience. We've been running them for years now and Katie runs hers continuously. I take mine off when it's dusty and if the 3m Helitape I use is worn replace.

Katies is on an old Canyon spectral (Oval stays that are quite pointed at the top) and a round tubed Whyte hardtail. My full sus and HT are both square stayed Nicolai's. No paint damage to any of them and never have ties come undone.

Maybe you're not getting the zip ties tight enough so that it's moving a bit? This Cable Tie tool is one of those 'tools you never knew you needed until you used it' and only £12

I use 3M black insulation putty tape to seal the gap and stop crud getting in there and wearing the paint away. Does a great job and because it's very pliable it's easy to mold to seal the gap all the way around.

Helitape then cut up innertube wrap secured at the ends with electrical tape. Decent quality cable ties done up FT, no movement or damage at all. F-ugly though, I took it off during the freeze!

As above. Helitape snug to frame, then a tight wrap of inner tube, then super tight zipties. I used a hot screwdriver to enlarge the ziptie holes to use thicker zipties.

Not had a problem with it rubbing through, but I double up with a heli-tape layer, and then a good wrap of self-amalgamating tape over the top.
Because the S-A tape is rubbery it stops any rattles and movement.

Topeak XC11. Great bit of kit.

Mudhugger but with proper protective tape and decent cable ties, fitted as tight as possible.

In order to make it as easy as possible to keep things neat, I usually run a layer of cheaper, more easily replaced tape on the helicopter tape.

I use the 3M self amalgamating tape too.

Could have sworn I saw a thread on this the other day but can't find it now...
Someone suggested: 1. Helitape the stay. 2. Affix 4-6 zip ties directly around the stay. 3. THEN mount the guard so that the guard is supported by the first set of zip ties and is not in direct contact with the stay. I haven't tried it but it makes sense to me.

@mcbyker that was probably me, ive being doing that for a couple of years

Not had a problem with my rear mudhugger which ive been using for 2 years but i did make sure i properly protected the seatstays

I fitted the supplied protection tape followed by two wraps of Gorilla tape then finally i fitted 3 zip ties per side before fitting the mudhugger

By fitting 3 zip ties per side before fitting the mudhugger means when you do fit the mudhugger it sits on top of the zip ties keeping it away from the frame, then secure using more zip ties using the holes provided on the mudhugger

This means any movement and the mudhugger rubs against the zip ties not the protection tape/Gorilla tape

+1 for Topeak XC11 - I tried a few before settling on that and it's great. I like the fact that it secures to the seatpost so no issue with ruining paintwork.

The front one that partners with it is awful though. I put an RRP Proguard on the front as it screws on and works a treat.

I just stick to crud catchers on the mtb and zefal swan/croozer on the gravel bike. Simple to take on and off and minimal scuffing with a bit of helitape. Plus I prefer the look of them

Mudhugger here - transformed my winter riding (and the washing machine). Attached straight onto old Cotic Soda and has been rock solid. Luckily there is no paint to scratch off!

Nparker +1

I really, really hate the aesthetics of the thing, but its utility is highly effective and undeniable.

+1 for inner tube condom secured by tape or tie wraps. It is ugly though!

Only rear mtb mudguard I’ve used that actually works.

nparker +1 again. Have used one this winter and has been a revelation in terms of not getting back with a big brown pair of shorts, instead they're lightly spattered and straight into the wash (if at all).

I plan on respraying my frame at some point soon, so paint damage isn't such an issue, but used the generous amount of helitape that came with the mudhugger and plenty of zip ties.

Not my experience. Fit and forget. Really helps keep you dry (and hence warm) and helps keep some of the gunge off the bike.

Mudhuggers come with thick frame tape? Maybe not enough for all frames but plenty for mine.

Mine sits on top of a couple of the Renthal Padded Cell Chainstay Protectors.   An overkill but it works for me.

I love the amount of mud they keep off me 😃

Thick helicopter tape and no rubbing in the last two winters
